Abstract

A connector to easily and correctly join an electrical component to a printed circuit board is provided. The connector comprises a generally C-shaped electrically conductive element that provides for connection alternatively to the positive and negative terminals of a device depending on the orientation of the connector. In this way, one connector is made that can be used to alternatively satisfy connection to both positive and negative terminals and thereby simplify the construction of the element. Because of the shapes of the ends of the connector, a device can only be plugged in one way. The connector can be made from a single sheet of electrically conductive material bent generally into a "C" shape, with specific tabs and cuts made therein. The connector includes a tab that allows for quick and automated connection to a printed circuit board, and an element to prevent connectors from interlocking while in a loose and unconnected state as, during manufacturing, plating, or storage, allowing them to be added to a board using automated procedures for quick, accurate and low cost construction.

Abstract

Provided are methods, apparatus and systems for stabilization of a glow discharge from a plasma. Also provided are methods, apparatus and systems for processing optical signals from a stabilised glow plasma with enhanced signal to noise recovery. A first method comprises: generating an electric field within a plasma cell using an alternating excitation voltage to excite particles within the cell, to produce a glow discharge from a plasma in the plasma cell in a resonant condition; monitoring, in each excitation cycle of the alternating excitation voltage, one or more signals that correlate with glow discharge optical emissions from the plasma in the plasma cell; and, in response to said monitoring, controlling one or more operating conditions for the plasma cell to maintain the glow discharge emissions from the plasma within a desired operating range in each excitation cycle of the alternating excitation voltage. A relatively stable glow discharge optical emission is maintained via dynamic resonant feedback control of operating conditions such as the electric field that is used to excite particles within the plasma cell. The stabilization of the glow plasma can be used in glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GD-OES) for gas analysis and in other applications.

Abstract

A FBG strain sensor arrangement includes a sensor carrier of steel sheet to which a FBG strain sensor is fastened. A protective cover has a first part configured thin and narrow and bonded to the sensor carrier along an optical fiber so that the optical fiber lying underneath is fixed with a fiber Bragg grating on the sensor carrier. The protective cover is enlarged at each end portion of the optical fiber to thereby form a cavity underneath, with edges of the enlarged second part of the protective cover being bonded to the sensor carrier. Arranged in the cavity is an elastic filler which embeds the coupling points in a vibration damping manner. The protective cover with elastic filler accommodates thermal expansions and functions for dynamic measurements by the vibration damping.

Abstract

A method and system for correcting the effect of intensity fluctuations of the transmitted light in an absorption spectroscopy system used for the detection or measurement of chemical species in a medium, whereby one or more modulation bursts are imposed onto a light beam that passes through the medium. This burst signal may be obtained by modulating the bias current of a tunable diode laser, and the modulation burst signal may be optimally at the second harmonic of the modulation frequency of a wavelength modulated beam to allow usage of the same signal path processing used for the spectroscopic detection of the measurand for a second harmonic detection system. The burst signal can be controlled using a smooth window function to minimise the effects of non-linear perturbations that are inherent in tunable diode laser wavelength modulation spectroscopy systems, of optical interference fringes (etalons) and of the residual light absorption by background chemical species or the measurand at the wavelength coinciding with the modulation burst.

Abstract

Apparatus (100) for measuring particle size distribution by light scattering comprises a blue LED (102) and a 633 nm helium neon laser (104). Light output from the LED and laser is separately passed or reflected by a dichroic element (116) onto a common path through a sample cell (122) containing a sample, the particle size distribution of which is to be measured. Light scattered from the sample cell is detected by one or more detectors (112B-H). Light transmitted by the sample cell is detected by detectors 112A, 112J. Output signals from one or more of the detectors are passed to a computation unit (114) which calculates particle size distribution. A small percentage of light from the blue LED is reflected by the dichroic element to a detector (110). Similarly, a small percentage of light from the laser is passed by the dichroic element to the detector. Output signals from the detector are fed back to control units (106, 108) to stabilize the output power of the LED and laser.

Abstract

The invention concerns a measuring amplifier (103) with background calibration and adjustment, as well as a method for performing background calibration and adjustment for a measuring amplifier of this type. The measuring amplifier amplifies, digitizes and processes at least one measurement signal (111) from at least one sensing element (102) by means of at least one amplifier arrangement (108) which can temporarily be replaced with an additional amplifier arrangement (107), enabling its continuous calibration and, if necessary, adjustment. In the case of calibration, both a zero error and an amplification error of the amplifier arrangement are reliably determined. In addition, the amplifier arrangement is calibrated directly, not indirectly, thus achieving a high level of accuracy without interrupting measuring. Furthermore, only one additional amplifier arrangement is generally required, even for a measuring amplifier having a plurality of channels.
