The invention provides methods for the formation of thermo-reversible hydrogels from triblock copolymers of poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(α-benzyl carboxylate-ε-caprolactone) (PBCL-PEG-PBCL) prepared by bulk and solution polymerization. PBCL-PEG-PBCLs prepared at fixed PBCL to PEG ratios but different polymerization times were characterized for their average molecular weights, molar-mass disparity and intrinsic viscosity using 1H NMR and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The results indicated a copolymer of high molecular weight population with elevated intrinsic viscosity. The size and proportion of this population grew as a function of polymerization time. The formation of this high molecular weight PBCL-PEG-PBCL population can be attributed to non-linear architecture caused by partial cross-linking of the PBCL segment during the polymerization reaction. At least about 40% mole concentration of the high molecular weight PBCL-PEG-PBCL was required for thermo-reversible micellar aggregation in aqueous media and hydrogel formation.

The development of stretchable, mechanically and electrically robust interconnects by printing an elastic, silver-based composite ink onto stretchable fabric. Such interconnects can have conductivity of 3000-4000 S/cm and are durable under cyclic stretching. In serpentine shape, the fabric-based conductor is enhanced in electrical durability. Resistance increases only ˜5 times when cyclically stretched over a thousand times from zero to 30% strain at a rate of 4% strain per second due to the ink permeating the textile structure. The textile fibers are ‘wetted’ with composite ink to form a conductive, stretchable cladding of the silver particles. The e-textile can realize a fully printed, double-sided electronic system of sensor-textile-interconnect integration. The double-sided e-textile can be used for a surface electromyography (sEMG) system to monitor muscles activities, an electroencephalography (EEG) system to record brain waves, and the like.

A monitoring/calibrating system is provided based on the amplitude and/or phase of electric and/or magnetic fields measurements. In transmitter mode of AUT, one or more probe sets are placed very close to the AUT around the radiation aperture of AUT to prevent probes effects on the AUT performance. For each amplitude/phase state of AUT controller, the near field data are measured and compared with a previously stored dataset. A successive method can reduce the error by changing the amplitude/phase of AUT controller. Moreover, a machine learning method can be used to classify the errors in near field data, errors in amplitude/phase of AUT controller, and automatically tuning the AUT controller. In receiver mode of AUT, the system is the same but the probe sets are working as transmitters to make a known near field around the AUT.

A system for delivering fertilizer to the roots of a plant includes coated fertilizer particles. The coating can include a cellulose derivative, optionally a fatty acid, and a component, such as an aptamer, which binds specifically to a material, such as serine, which is released by the roots of the plant when the plant is actively taking up nutrients from the soil. The permeability of the coating increases when the coated particles are exposed to the material released by the roots of the plant. Thus, nutrient release from the coated fertilizer particles is synchronized with uptake of the nutrients by the plant during active growth. Advantages of the system may include one or more of improved nitrogen use efficiency by the plant, improved crop productivity, and/or reduced leaching of fertilizer from the soil.

The present invention relates to a method of forming a macrocyclic peptide bearing a pharmacophore and said produced macrocyclic peptide, wherein the method comprises the steps of: reacting a peptide with two thiol groups of cysteine side chains with the reactive compound 1,5-dichloropentanedion-2,4. The reaction between the reactive compound and the peptide produces an 1,3-diketone-containing macrocyclic polypeptide. The macrocycle with a 1,3-diketone group is then modified by reaction of said macrocycle with an alkyl or aryl hydrazine group bearing a pharmacophore in benign aqueous conditions. The macrocycles may be displayed in a library, such as a phage display library, and used to biopan for affinity against a selected target.

Cryopreservation of endothelial cell monolayers is one of the major challenges in the cryopreservation of complex tissues. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) in suspension are available commercially and recently their post-thaw cell membrane integrity was significantly improved by cryopreservation in 5% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and 6% hydroxyethyl starch (HES). However, cryopreservation of cells in monolayers has been elusive. The exact mechanisms of damage during cell monolayer cryopreservation are still under investigation. Here, we show that a combination of different factors contribute to significant progress in cryopreservation of cell monolayers. The addition of 2% chondroitin sulfate to 5% DMSO and 6% HES and cooling at 0.2 or 1° C./min led to high membrane integrity (97.3±3.2%) immediately after thaw when HUVECs were cultured on a substrate with a coefficient of thermal expansion similar to that of ice. The optimized cryopreservation protocol was applied to monolayers of primary porcine corneal endothelial cells, and resulted in high post-thaw viability (95.9±3.7% membrane integrity) with metabolic activity 12 hours post-thaw comparable to unfrozen control.

The textile fibers are wetted with composite ink to form a conductive, stretchable cladding of the silver particles. The e-textile can realize a fully printed, double-sided electronic system of sensor-textile-interconnect integration. The double-sided e-textile can be used for a surface electromyography (sEMG) system to monitor muscles activities, an electroencephalography (EEG) system to record brain waves, and the like.

A sensor and method for use in measuring a physical characteristic of a fluid in a microfluidic system is provided. A microfluidic chip has a thin deformable membrane that separates a microfluidic channel from a microwave resonator sensor. The membrane is deformable in response to loading from interaction of the membrane with the fluid. Loading may be fluid pressure in the channel, or shear stress or surface stress resulting from interaction of the membrane with the fluid. The deformation of the membrane changes the permittivity in the region proximate the sensor. A change in permittivity causes a change in the electrical parameters of the sensor, thereby allowing for a characteristic of the fluid, such as flow rate, or a biological or chemical characteristic, to be measured. Also, a microwave sensor with improved sensitivity for characterizing a fluid in a microfluidic channel is provided. The sensor has a rigid and very thin layer, for example in the range of 10 um to 100 um, in the microfluidic chip allowing for the positioning of the sensor very close to the microfluidic channel, which enables very high resolution sensing.

Systems and methods for use in measuring sympathetic nervous system activity or blood vessel autoregulation corrected for sympathetic activity. The choroid in the human eye is imaged and, using the resulting image, the vascular perfusion density (VPD) in the choroid is measured. VPD provides a measurement that is directly related to sympathetic nervous system activity. The effect of stimuli on sympathetic nervous system activity can be measured by comparing pre-stimuli VPD measurements with post-stimuli measurements. Quantifying VPD can be performed by determining pixel density within specific areas of the choroid image. Altered sympathetic nervous system activity can be detected in a subject by comparing that subject's VPD measurements to baseline VPD measurements from healthy individuals. Blood vessel autoregulation can be measured by imaging changes in other blood vessels in the eye and correcting with choroid VPD measurements of sympathetic activity.
