The present invention relates to the technical field of data transmission, and disclosed are a method and apparatus for processing a data message. The method comprises: a load balancing device receives a target data message, performs protocol stack processing on the target data message on the basis of a user mode protocol stack, and determines a target protocol type of the target data message; the load balancing device performs scheduling processing on the target data message by means of a scheduling processing function corresponding to the target protocol type and registered in a user mode netfilter framework; and the load balancing device performs forwarding or response processing on the target data message on the basis of a result of the scheduling processing. The use of the present invention reduces the dependence of a message processing flow on a kernel mode, reduces the processing frequency of message copy, and thus saves the processing performance consumption of a load balancing device; moreover, maintenance processing, such as upgrade and replacement, of the data message processing flow is also more convenient and simpler.
