A water level regulating mechanism ensures that in the case of sufficient filling of the water tank a water level moves in the working range within a predetermined range. This mechanism corresponds substantially to the so-called bird bath principle. Consequently the mechanism has at least one air feed into the water tank. Said air feed serves for equalisation of the volume of water running out of the tank into the working range. The device is characterised in that above the water level (2) an open-pored element (15) - in particular a filter foam element - is arranged, through which the air flowing through the air feed rises upwards.
