Abstract

A vehicle is operable in three modes of operation. The vehicle includes a first electromagnetic device, a second electromagnetic device electrically coupled to the first electromagnetic device, and an engine coupled to the first electromagnetic device and configured to drive the first electromagnetic device to provide electrical energy. In each of the three modes of operation, whenever the engine drives the first electromagnetic device to provide the electrical energy, the first electromagnetic device operates without providing the electrical energy to an energy storage device.

Abstract

A military vehicle including an engine coupled to the chassis for providing mechanical power to the military vehicle, a motor/generator coupled to the engine, and an energy storage system including a battery electrically coupled to the motor/generator. The military vehicle is operable in a silent mobility mode with the engine inactive and the energy storage system providing power to the motor/generator to operate the military vehicle. The motor/generator and the battery are sized such that electrical power generation through engine drive of the motor/generator is greater than the power depletion through operation of the military vehicle in the silent mobility mode. The motor/generator can charge the energy storage system while the military vehicle is driving or stationary.

The chassis includes a passenger capsule, a front module coupled to a front end of the passenger capsule, and a rear module coupled to a rear end of the passenger capsule. The passenger capsule defines a tunnel extending longitudinally along a bottom thereof. The front module includes a front subframe assembly. The rear module includes a rear subframe assembly. The front axle is coupled to the front subframe assembly. The rear axle is coupled to the rear subframe assembly. The engine is supported by the front subframe assembly. The transmission is positioned within the tunnel and coupled to the front axle and/or the rear axle. The motor is at least partially positioned within the tunnel and positioned between the engine and the transmission.

Abstract

A military vehicle includes an engine, an energy storage system, an accessory drive coupled to the engine and including an air compressor and a first motor, a second motor coupled to an axle, and a clutch positioned between the engine and the second motor. The clutch is spring-biased into engagement with the engine and pneumatically disengaged by an air supply selectively provided thereto based on operation of the air compressor. In an engine mode, (i) the clutch does not receive the air supply such that the engine is coupled to the second motor and (ii) the engine drives (a) the accessory drive and (b) the axle through the second motor. In the electric mode, (i) the first motor drives the air compressor to compress air to facilitate supplying the air supply to the clutch to disengage the clutch and decouple the engine from the second motor and (ii) the second motor drives the axle.

Abstract

A valve assembly includes a valve body defining an inner volume, a flow controller positioned within the inner volume, a plug positioned within the inner volume, and a biasing element. The plug is spaced from the flow controller such that an intermediate chamber is defined between the plug and the flow controller. The biasing element is positioned in the intermediate chamber between the plug and the flow controller. The plug is repositionable within the inner volume. As the plug moves within the inner volume, the plug interacts with the biasing element such that the biasing element provides a biasing force to the flow controller.

Abstract

A vehicle includes a prime mover, a charging system, a plurality of electrical loads electrically coupled to the charging system, and a controller. The charging system is coupled to the prime mover and includes a charge storing device and an alternator. The alternator is configured to convert mechanical energy generated by prime mover into electrical energy to charge the charge storing device. The electrical loads are electrically coupled to the charging system via a power distribution module. The controller is configured to receive an indication that an electrical output of the charging system is unable to provide sufficient electrical energy to each of the plurality of electrical loads, and provide a control signal to the power distribution module in response to the indication. The control signal is configured to cause the power distribution module to decouple at least one of the plurality of electrical loads from the charging system.

Abstract

A military vehicle includes a brake positioned to facilitate braking a tractive element, a brake housing defining an inner volume, a piston separating the inner volume into a first chamber and a second chamber, a rod extending through an end of the brake housing and coupled to the piston where the rod is positioned to selectively engage with the brake to inhibit movement of the tractive element, a resilient member positioned within the inner volume and configured to generate a biasing force against the piston such that the rod is biased into engagement with the brake, and an air-to-hydraulic intensifier coupled to the brake housing. The air-to-hydraulic intensifier is configured to receive a supply of air and provide a hydraulic fluid to the brake housing based on the supply of air to overcome the biasing force to disengage the rod from the brake to permit movement of the tractive element.

Abstract

Systems and methods for controlling a gas spring in a suspension system. The suspension system includes a gas spring and an accumulator coupled to the gas spring and having a bladder. The accumulator may be in a compressed state and an uncompressed state based on a pressure difference across the bladder. A target amount of gas in the gas spring is determined. The amount of gas in the gas spring is adjusted towards the target amount of gas in accordance with a pressure difference across the bladder based on the difference between the first pressure and the second pressure.

Each gas spring is configured to impart an upward force on the sprung mass. The upward force varies based on a pressure of a pressurized gas within a chamber of the gas spring. Each pressure sensor is configured to provide a signal indicative of the pressure of the pressurized gas within one of the chambers. The controller is configured to determine a weight of the sprung mass using the signals from the pressure sensors. The controller is configured to monitor at least one operational condition of the vehicle and determine whether or not to disable determination of the weight based on the operational condition.

Abstract

Systems and methods for controlling one or more tractive assemblies of a vehicle responsive to a disabling event. A sensor is arranged to detect one or more conditions of a tractive element indicative of the functionality of the tractive element. The sensor generates data corresponding to the detected conditions. The tractive element is coupled to a frame of the vehicle and configured to support a portion of the weight of the vehicle. When the tractive element is determined to not be functioning properly, control signal(s) for an actuator are generated to control a distance between the tractive element and the frame. The control signal(s) cause the tractive element to be effectively raised from a support surface for the vehicle.

Abstract

A suspension element includes a main body having an internal volume configured to contain a liquid therein, a tubular element extending at least partially within the main body, the tubular element having an internal volume that defines a first fluid chamber configured to contain a compressible gas therein, a first piston separating the internal volume of the main body into a second fluid chamber and a third fluid chamber, a second piston positioned to separate the first fluid chamber from the second fluid chamber, and a flow control element disposed along a flow path between the second fluid chamber and the third fluid chamber. Movement of the tubular element generates a flow of the liquid through the flow control element to produce a damping force and changes the pressure of the compressible gas to produce a spring force.

Abstract

A method of operating a first electric machine and a second electric machine in a vehicle drive includes operating the vehicle drive in a first operating mode by operating the first electric machine to regulate electrical power at a bus to maintain a first voltage on the bus and operating the second electric machine to consume electrical power from the bus. The method includes operating the vehicle drive in a second operating mode by operating the first electric machine to consume electrical power from the bus and operating the second electric machine to regulate electrical power at the bus to maintain a second voltage on the bus. A sum of the electrical power regulated by the first electric machine, the electrical power losses, and the electrical power consumed by the second electric machine is zero in the first operating mode and in the second operating mode.
