Abstract

A controller for a flywheel driven fastening tool that keeps the flywheel active at or near a ready-to-fire state, for a defined period of time without the continuous user input into the trigger switch or contact trip. The controller controls two (2) or more different timeout periods and flywheel speeds that occur due to different scenarios, such as variations in the user input at the trigger and contact trip. As a result, the controller reduces the wait time for the flywheel to return to a target speed. Thus, user time for performing a nailer application with a flywheel nailer is decreased.

Abstract

A fastening tool having a magazine pusher position detection system that informs the tool of a dry fire state due to less than a predetermined number of fasteners in the magazine assembly. The magazine pusher position detection system includes a sensor and a sensor target having a characteristic that is sensed by the sensor. When the characteristic is interrupted by an external member on the pusher, the sensor sends a signal to thebcontroller indicative of a "low nail" or a "low fastener" condition. This can be done magnetically or optically. The controller then initiates a dry fire lockout that prevents the tool from driving a fastener, and actuates an indicator that notifies the user of a "low nail" or "low fastener" condition.

Abstract

A fastening tool using Hall sensor technology as a contactless solution to home position sensing of a drive shaft. In this manner, an omnipolar switch Hall effect sensor PCB assembly can be placed in a fastening tool housing or on a driving mechanism of the tool to detect a magnet that is attached to a drive shaft. The drive shaft is attached to an eccentric member that can control the height or position of a compression piston. On the piston return cycle, the piston must stop within a predetermined range from bottom dead center in order to be in the home position. Through the connection with the eccentric member, the drive shaft also returns to its home position. In the drive shaft home position, the magnet is within the Hall effect sensor sensing zone. The Hall effect sensor detects the magnetic flux and sends a corresponding signal to the controller.

Abstract

A power tool that includes a housing, a motor, an end effector, an electrostatic clutch assembly, and a control circuit is provided. In a first mode of operation, the control circuit causes a first voltage to be applied to a first electrode and a different second voltage to be applied to a second electrode, generating a first attractive force between the first and second electrodes, which causes an output member to rotate together with an input member when a torque on the output member is less than or equal to a first threshold value and which causes the output member to rotationally slip relative to the input member when the torque on the output member exceeds the first threshold value, interrupting torque transmission from the input member to the output member.

Abstract

A toggle fastener includes an arm extending along a first axis and defining a threaded opening through the arm along a direction perpendicular to the first axis the toggle fastener. A rachet strap extends along a second axis and is pivotally coupled to the arm adjacent a proximal end of the rachet strap. The arm and rachet strap cooperate to block the arm and rachet strap from aligning. Pivoting the arm and the rachet strap relative to each other about a first direction, the angle between the first and second axes can be reduced to a first angle before further pivoting is blocked in a first blocking configuration of the toggle fastener. Attempting to pivot the rachet strap further in the first direction relative to the arm causes the rachet strap to recoverably flex.

Abstract

Frangible connectors can extend between and can alone couple adjacent insulator bodies together. The insulator bodies can also include counteracting frangible connectors that can be spaced from and coupled solely to a single one of the plurality of insulator bodies. The counteracting frangible connectors provide a counteracting shearing operation, which can help counteract the counterclockwise rotational movement that the frangible connectors tend to impart as they are sheared. The insulator bodies can be mounted on staples. The insulator bodies can have an upper bridge profile and the staples can have a lower crown profile opposing the upper bridge profile. The lower crown profile and the upper bridge profile can have opposite end portions that engage each other and can have central portions that are simultaneously spaced from each other to provide a central space between corresponding central portions of the insulator bridge and the staple crown.

Abstract

A system for remotely retrieving sensed conditions at one or more building components. The building components are remote or numerous so that a wireless collection of the sensed conditions provides a significant benefit to a builder or building operator. A remote transceiver sends a wireless signal to a building component. The building component includes an onboard transceiver. At least some of the energy from the transmitted wireless signal is received by the onboard transceiver, sent to a storage device, and stored therein. The stored energy is used to operate a sensor for sensing an onboard condition. The onboard condition is then wirelessly transmitted by the onboard transceiver back to the remote transceiver to be displayed.

Abstract

A battery-powered motor may include an electric motor, a controller, and a housing. The electric motor may be wound to enable the battery-powered motor to achieve a non-limited motor maximum motor revolutions per minute (RPM) for at least one specified battery. The controlling current may include limiting current to the electric motor at lower RPMs, and limiting the current to prevent the RPM of the electric motor from exceeding a limited maximum motor RPM which is lower than the non-limited motor maximum RPM. The housing may enclose the electric motor and the controller and the specified battery. The housing may have a form factor to engage with a machine that engages with an internal combustion engine that has a maximum engine RPM that is approximately the same as the limited maximum motor RPM.

Abstract

When providing alternating current (AC) power to operate AC powered devices such as power tools (such as drills, table saws, miter saws), equipment (such as lawn mowers), and consumer products (such as refrigerators, television, lights) without being tied to a fixed utility power supply typically requires a generator (such as an internal combustion engine based generator) or a battery powered inverter. In order to meet power and runtime needs for these devices, a battery powered inverter must be relatively large and expensive. This simple fact prohibits their use in many environments.

Abstract

A fastening tool includes a contact trip operatively associated with a contact trip switch to enable a fastener drive system to be fired when the contact trip reaches a firing position, after having engaged a work surface. If a dry-fire condition exists in a magazine connected to the fastening tool, the movement of the contact trip is completely taken up or absorbed by a biasing agent so that the contact trip switch is not closed. The biasing agent also limits the amount of force that can be applied to the contact trip switch in the event an operator slams the contact trip against a work surface or drops the fastening tool nose-first onto an unyielding surface.

Abstract

A direct fastening fastener particularly suited for use in normal weight or lightweight composite deck system. The fastener is heat treated to a dual-hardness level so that a portion of the fastener is capable of driving into the support member, such as a joist and a decking member. The remaining portion of the fastener remains relatively ductile so that it can withstand and transfer shear loads imposed by shifting of the concrete slab, which overlies the composite decking, to the support member. The fastener can be a single or multiple piece fastener which includes specially formed annular flanges that enhance interlocking between the fastener, the concrete slab and support members.

Abstract

A concrete anchor capable of resisting large loads while requiring minimal embedment depth. The system includes a concrete structure including a cylindrical opening in the concrete surface thereof. The system also uses an anchor which includes a sleeve and a plug. The sleeve includes at least two legs extending toward a first end of the sleeve. The plug includes an increasing diameter portion disposed toward a first end of the plug. The plug includes a locking opening. After installation, legs of the sleeve extend radially outward past the wall and the increasing diameter portion prevents inward movement of the legs to lock the sleeve and the plug in turn in the concrete cylindrical opening. Furthermore, dynamic loading on the plug via the locking opening when the anchor is in use generates a dynamic radially outward force on the legs to secure the anchor in the concrete hole.

Abstract

Conduction band control schemes are presented for reducing noise and/or lower harmonics in power tools. A controller in the tool is interfaced with a plurality of motor switches and, for each phase, operates to output a pulse-width modulated (PWM) signal to one or more of the motor switches to control power supplied to the electric motor. The controller is also configured to monitor a parameter indicative of the load on the motor. In response to detecting a load greater than a threshold, the controller controls power output of the motor by setting conduction band of the motor switches and the advance angle to baseline values predetermined values. In response to detecting a load less than the threshold, the controller reduces at least one of the conduction band and the advance angle to a value less than the baseline values.

Abstract

A power tool includes a multi-phase BLDC motor, a plurality of switches, an input unit, and a controller. For each phase, the controller operates to vary power output to the motor between a first power and a second power by varying a duty cycle of a PWM signal from 0 % to 100 % while keeping a conduction band (CB) of corresponding motor switches and/or an advance angle (AA) at a predetermined value when the input unit moves between a first position and a predetermined position between the first and a second position. For each phase, the controller operates to increase the power output by the motor to greater than the second power by increasing the CB/AA to greater than the predetermined value while keeping the duty cycle of the PWM signal at 100 % when the input unit moves between the predetermined position and the second position.
