Abstract

Nonlethal cartridges adapted to be chambered in a firearm having a barrel that includes rifling are provided. In one example, the cartridge includes a cartridge case and a sabot that is telescopically coupled to the cartridge case and that has a sabot mouth. A projectile includes a polymer base projectile portion disposed in the sabot mouth. A polymer front shell projectile portion is coupled to the polymer base projectile portion and has an outer surface that includes a circular locking rib feature that forms an interference fit with the sabot mouth. The polymer base projectile portion is configured to engage the rifling of the barrel to impart spin stabilization to the nonlethal projectile when propelled from the sabot in response to the expansion of a propellant gas.

Abstract

A marking projectile configured to be fired through the barrel of a firearm having rifling formed therein is provided. The marking projectile includes a polymeric base portion configured to engage the rifling of the barrel and a polymeric front shell portion coupled to the base portion. The polymeric front shell portion has a cavity formed therein for housing a marking compound and a structure configured to deform on impact and thereby release the marking compound. The marking projectile includes a metallic annular sealing component (e.g., a crimped metal ring) configured to seal the polymeric front shell portion to the polymeric base portion.

Abstract

The present device disclosed is a reduced energy training cartridge for use in a straight blowback operated firearm. Prior art reduced energy ammunition casings are often made with brass. However, brass is relatively expensive for reduced energy cartridge case applications. Thus, there exists a need for a reduced energy training round which employs inexpensive materials while simultaneously providing a simple and robust design which can easily be manufacture on a large scale. The present device comprises a barrel with firing chamber, the cartridge comprising a cartridge case (20) being defined by a rear portion (21 ) with an external groove (22), a front portion having a velocity reduction structure (30) and a wall with an outer surface and an inner surface, a sabot (50) slideably engaged within the cartridge case, the sabot having a rear portion (56) with an outside diameter substantially equal to the inside diameter of the inner surface of the cartridge case and which contains a gas sealing ( 51 ) and braking structure and a primer (40) disposed in the rear portion of the cartridge case where, upon percussion of the primer, the cartridge case rapidly slides relative to the sabot until such point when the velocity reduction structure of the cartridge case engages with the sealing and braking structure of the sabot, thereby stopping further movement of the cartridge case relative to the sabot. The present device also contemplates using a metallic case in combination with a non-metallic or polymer sabot.

Abstract

A novel non-toxic IR tracer composition is provided herein which, when incorporated into an IR tracer projectile which is then fired, generates a dim visibility IR trace. Such IR tracer composition is a non-toxic, boron-containing, IR tracer composition comprising: from about 20 to about 30% by weight, or from about 45 to about 60% by weight, of potassium perchlorate; from about 5 to about 16% by weight of a metallic fuel which consists only of boron; from about 15 to about 25% by weight, or from about 40 to about 50% by weight, of a non-metallic fuel which consists of sodium salicylate; from about 5 to about 10% by weight of a retardant which consists either of iron carbonate, magnesium carbonate or calcium carbonate; and from about 5 to about 15% by weight of a first binder which consists of calcium resinate, wherein the total percentage of such ingredients add up to 100%. A novel IR tracer projectile containing such IR tracer composition for generating a dim visibility IR trace is also provided.
