Abstract

A waveguide is disclosed for use in an augmented reality or virtual reality display. The waveguide includes a plurality of optical structures exhibiting differences in refractive index from a surrounding waveguide medium. The optical structures are arranged in an array to provide at least two diffractive optical elements (H1, H2) overlaid on one another in the waveguide. Each of the two diffractive optical elements is configured to receive light from an input direction and couple it towards the other diffractive optical element which can then act as an output diffractive optical element, providing outcoupled orders towards a viewer. The optical structures have a shape, when viewed in the plane of the waveguide, comprising a plurality of substantially straight sides having respective normal vectors at different angles and this can effectively reduce the amount of light that is coupled out of the waveguide on first interaction with the optical structures.

Abstract

An ephemeral gallery of ephemeral messages is provided. An ephemeral message comprising the media content such as photographic or video content is posted to the ephemeral gallery. The ephemeral message has an associated message duration parameter determining the duration for which the message is displayed on-screen during automated slide-show type viewing of the gallery, and has a gallery participation parameter indicating a time value for continued availability of the ephemeral message in the ephemeral gallery. The ephemeral gallery is eliminated from availability for viewing upon expiry of a gallery availability parameter. The gallery is in some embodiments eliminated at the expiry of a gallery timer or at the expiry of the gallery participation parameter of a last posted ephemeral message in the gallery, whichever is earliest.

Abstract

An optical device is disclosed for expanding input light in two dimensions in an augmented reality display. The device comprises a waveguide (12) and three linear diffraction gratings H0, H1, H2. An incident beam from a projector illuminates an input grating H0 with polychromatic light, and the light is coupled into the waveguide (12). The other two gratings H1, H2 are overlaid on top of one another. Light can be diffracted by one grating H1 into a first diffracted order and towards the other grating H2 which can couple the light out of the waveguide (12) towards a viewer. In another arrangement the crossed gratings H1, H2 may be replaced by a photonic crystal (19) having a regular array of pillars (20) which create a number effective diffraction gratings.

Abstract

A server including a processor configured to execute instructions for performing operations. The processor involves selecting a plurality of photograph filters based upon a geolocation of a client device on which an image is presented and an object depicted in the image, and supplying, to the client device, the plurality of photograph filters that were selected based upon the geolocation of the client device and the object depicted in the image. The plurality of photograph filters are configured to be independently alternatively selectable by a user to overlay the image. Each of the plurality of photograph filters is configured to overlay the image to augment the image. A first filter of the plurality of photograph filters that is configured to modify an entirety of the image is selected in response to a first user input. A second filter of the plurality of photograph filters that is configured to modify only a first particular feature of an object depicted in the image is selected in response to a second user input received after the first user input. The processor also involves routing a selected one of the plurality of photograph filters and a photograph corresponding to the image to another client device.

Abstract

A helmet or head-mounted apparatus has a visor or other curved optical element in front of at least one eye of a wearer, which element also is used as a waveguide. Image-bearing light is injected into the waveguide via an input diffractive element, and propagates through the visor to an output diffractive element which releases the light. The optical powers of the curved waveguide and the input and output diffractive elements are selected so that the released light is delivered as an image to the users eye.
