This document describes techniques and systems for stationary object detection and classification based on low-level radar data. Raw electromagnetic signals reflected off stationary objects and received by a radar system may be preprocessed to produce low-level spectrum data in the form of range-Doppler maps that retain all or nearly all the data present in the raw electromagnetic signals. The preprocessing may also filter non-stationary range-Doppler bins. The remaining low-level spectrum data represents stationary objects present in a field-of-view (FOV) of the radar system. The low-level spectrum data representing stationary objects can be fed to an end-to-end deep convolutional detection and classification network that is trained to classify and provide object bounding boxes for the stationary objects. The outputted classifications and bounding boxes related to the stationary objects may be provided to other driving systems to improve their functionality resulting in a safer driving experience.

An energy peak within this two-dimensional representation is determined. Data associated with the energy peak, including a range and range rate, are determined from compensating the energy peak for movement of the object within a single frame. This compensation can include adjusting frequencies associated with the energy peak in the fast-time dimension and/or the slow-time dimension. The data associated with the energy peak is output to enable radar tracking with more accurate range and range rates measurements than can be output without performing movement compensation.

Techniques are provided for a method implemented by a computer, e.g., a computer onboard an autonomous vehicle (100). A planning circuit (404) onboard the vehicle (100) and connected to an Electric Power Steering (EPS) of the vehicle determines a compensatory torque signal to modify an actual steering angle of a steering wheel (1310) of the vehicle to match an expected steering angle of the steering wheel. The planning circuit transmits the compensatory torque signal to a control circuit (1102) that controls the steering angle of the steering wheel (1310). The EPS modifies the actual steering angle based on the compensatory torque signal resulting in a modified steering angle. The control circuit operates the vehicle based on the modified steering angle.

Among other things, we describe techniques for automatically selecting data samples for annotation. The techniques use bounding box prediction based on a bounding box score distribution, spatial probability density determined from bounding box sizes and positions and an ensemble score variance determined from outputs of multiple machine learning models to select data samples for annotation. In an embodiment, temporal inconsistency cues are used to select data samples for annotation. In an embodiment, digital map constraints or other map-based data are used to exclude data samples from annotation. In an exemplary application, the annotated data samples are used to train a machine learning model that outputs perception data for an autonomous vehicle application.
Techniques are disclosed for utilizing passenger attention data captured in vehicles for vehicle localization and location-based services. In an embodiment, a method includes receiving sensor data from one or more sensors of an autonomous vehicle operating in an environment, and generating passenger attention data for a passenger of the autonomous vehicle using the sensor data. A processing circuit determines one or more physical features in the environment based on the passenger attention data. The processing circuit obtains physical feature data associated with the physical feature(s) and initiates one or more actions on the AV based at least in part on the physical feature data. The actions include but are not limited to requesting content for physical features(s) and assisting in localization of the autonomous vehicle.
Technology described in this document can be embodied in a method that includes generating, using one or more processing devices of a vehicle operating in an environment, a discretized representation of the environment, including a plurality of cells. The cells are occupied by particles representing at least one of: an object, or a free space in the environment. Sensor data indicative of a state of at least one particle is received, and an update to a time-varying particle density function associated with a location of the particle in the dynamic occupancy grid is calculated from the sensor data and one or more models. The method further includes generating a prediction of occupancy of at least one cell in the discretized representation based on the updated particle density function, and operating the vehicle, using a controller circuit of the vehicle, based at least in part on the prediction.

An estimated yaw rate is determinedbased on a yaw rate model, the steering angle measurement and the estimated steering angleoffset. The yaw rate measurement and the estimated yaw rate are compared and an action isinitiated on the autonomous vehicle in response to the comparing.
Techniques for operation of a vehicle using machine learning with motion planning include storing, using one or more processors of a vehicle located within an environment, a plurality of constraints for operating the vehicle within the environment. One or more sensors of the vehicle receive sensor data describing the environment. The one or more processors extract a feature vector from the stored plurality of constraints and the received sensor data. The feature vector includes a first feature describing an object located within the environment. A machine learning circuit of the vehicle is used to generate a first motion segment based on the feature vector. A number of violations of the stored plurality of constraints is below a threshold. The one or more processors operate the vehicle in accordance with the generated first motion segment.
Using a planning circuit of a vehicle, a map of a geographic region is accessed. The map includes information identifying at least one lane on which vehicles can travel in the geographic region.
