Abstract

The present invention provides a method for applying multiple ink and/or coating layers on a substrate. At least one of the ink and/or coating layers contains one or more photoinitiators, and at least one of the ink and/or coating layers does not contain any photoinitiators. In certain embodiments, all of the ink and/or coating layers are wet trapped and the entire print construct is cured by exposure to UV radiation after all of the ink and/or coating layers have been applied. In certain embodiments, the wet trapping method of the present invention can be used to prepare laminates.

Abstract

The present invention discloses a method of enabling the easy separation of labels, including wrap around labels and sleeve labels, particularly shrink sleeve labels, from containers during recycling through the use of a specially formulated coating to be applied in the seam area. The coatings ensure proper bonding, and shrink properties, of the labels, and have been designed to help de-bonding of the seam in a hot caustic wash step, or a solvent wash step. The method does not rely on floatation separation and therefore may be applied to any container / label material combination regardless of their specific gravity differences.

Abstract

A system and method is presented for finding a combination of colorants to produce custom SPOT color inks without requi.pi.ng a com-plex suite of software algorithms The method in-cludes a search of a library of known colored inks p.pi.nted onto a specified substrate using specified p.pi.nting conditions Each record of the library can contain the ink formula, the combination of col-orants and resin, the spectral reflectance factor of the ink and substrate, color values of the solid ink color and 10% steps down to 0% In such a database halftones can be specified in units of per-centage, but can also, for example, be given as 8--bit integers (0 to 255) Such a search locates the solid ink color that meets the color requirements and simultaneously meets the color requirements at one or more intermediate halftone steps

Abstract

The present invention provides a liquid printing ink that produces high quality flexographic or gravure printing images that have excellent solvent and abrasion resistance. In addition, the printing ink of the invention has high re-solubility, even after complete drying, upon contact with the liquid vehicle of the same ink, thereby preventing clogging of the printing plate, anilox or gravure cylinders over time. These characteristics of the printing ink are obtained by preparing a hybrid ink in which conventional organic solvent and/or water-based liquid inks are mixed with energy curable monomers and/or oligomers of resins and, optionally, a photoinitiator. After drying the ink, the printed images are exposed to an actinic radiation so that highly cross-inked polymers are formed in the printed images, which become water, chemical and abrasion-resistant.
