Disclosed herein are embodiments of a method for producing furfural from a hemicellulose source material. Also disclosed are embodiments of a system for carrying out the method. In particular embodiments, the method can be carried out without adding an extraneous mineral acid to facilitate pentose production from the hemicellulose source material and thus byproducts produced by the method can be used as animal feed.

Systems and devices are disclosed to generate a multidimensional mass fingerprint that allows for identification on a low-resolution mass spectrometer equipped with post-ionization fragmentation. For this approach, rather than interrogating a sample that is processed into peptides using a single high resolution MS scan as in traditional fingerprinting, a raw unprocessed sample (containing all biochemical species; lipids, proteins, peptides, and metabolites) is analyzed by combining Matrix-Assisted Laser Dissociation/Ionization (MALDI) ionization with low resolution tandem mass spectrometry. The proposed system combines improvements in MS hardware and software with state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) approaches to usher in rapid biological detection. This technique does not require any prior separation (liquid or gas chromatography) and is therefore rapid (e.g. less than 5 sec) and amenable to high throughput (e.g. greater than 384 samples/hr).
The present disclosure provides system and method embodiments for extracting and separating rare earth elements (REEs) from various starting materials and sources. The system and method embodiments disclosed herein facilitate efficient REE extraction, separation, and/or isolation, even when the REEs are present in a starting material at a relatively low level compared to undesirable metals co-present in the starting material. In at least some examples, the disclosed system and method embodiments may be used to recover one or more REEs from coal derived acid mine drainage.

A computer implemented method for prediction of geomechanical performance including productivity index decline and completion integrity for a well or a hydrocarbon reservoir using a geomechanics informed machine intelligence (GIMI) algorithm. The method includes running a geomechanical reservoir simulator to generate training datasets for the hydrocarbon reservoir and incorporating physical models and identified variables into the GIMI algorithm. The method further includes training a neural network of the GIMI algorithm by using correlated training datasets that correlate to the physical models to produce a resulting prediction model and performing sensitivity analysis on the resulting prediction model.
