A paper sheet discrimination and counting device (10) has a hopper (15) to which paper sheets to be discriminated and counted are delivered, a paper sheet conveyance device (33) for continuously advancing by means of an advance roller the paper sheets which are delivered to the hopper (15) and conveying the paper sheets on a sheet-by-sheet basis along a conveyance path (52) in the direction of the short side of the paper sheets, a paper sheet discrimination unit (70) placed in the middle of the conveyance path (52) and discriminating and counting the paper sheets, and a stacker (20) in which paper sheets advanced from the conveyance path (52) are accumulated. The conveyance path (52) is constructed in a curved U-shape or a curved square U-shape from an advance conveyance path (52a), to the rear side of which paper sheets advanced from the hopper are continuously advanced, a downward linear conveyance path (52b) continuing from the advance conveyance path (52a) and having a magnetic sensor (66) located at a place upstream of the downward linear conveyance path (52b) so as to transverse the downward linear conveyance path (52b), and a downstream conveyance path (52c) extending forward toward the stacker (20) from the linear conveyance path (52b). The construction allows stable and continuous advance of paper sheets.
