An air conditioner (100) comprises: a compressor (11); an outdoor heat exchanger (12); an expansion valve (14); an indoor heat exchanger (15); an indoor fan (16); and a control unit that causes the indoor heat exchanger (15) to function as an evaporator and that carries out a process to freeze the indoor heat exchanger (15). The control unit carries out control such that the indoor fan (16) is driven during at least part of the period of the process and the temperature of the indoor heat exchanger (15) exceeds a predetermined value when the temperature is below the freezing point.
