Abstract

A method of duplex printing on a cut sheet printer having a sheet supply system for feeding sheets to a print station in a first orientation for printing a first image on the first side of the sheet and then in a second orientation for printing a second image on a second side of the sheet includes, for each sheet: (a) estimating a likelihood P1 that, in a print process for printing the first image, the sheet will become damaged to such an extent that the damage will compromise a later print process for printing the second image; (b) comparing the likelihood P1 to a threshold T; and (c) if the likelihood P1 exceeds the threshold T, reversing the print order so that the second image is printed before the first image. The method ensures that the riskier image is printed on the duplex pass. The chances of the sheet with the simplex image then successfully passing through the duplex pass are then increased.

Abstract

A duplex sheet printer comprising a first and second sheet quality detection device for determining a suitability of a sheet for printing. The first sheet quality detection device applies a first sheet rejection threshold to which sensed sheets are compared, while the second sheet quality detection device applies a second sheet rejection threshold different from the first. The controller designates sheets in the printing system to be sensed by one of the sheet quality detection devices in accordance with the sheet's media type or the sheet being on a simplex or duplex pass. Different rejection criteria are thus applied to the sheets without adjustment of a sheet quality detection device, resulting in high speed printing.

Abstract

A method is provided for cancelling an electric crosstalk contribution in a monitoring signal from a monitored electro-mechanical transducer in a device including at least three electro-mechanical transducers. The crosstalk contribution results from an actuation of other transducers than the monitored transducer. The method includes selecting a second transducer, associated with the first, monitored transducer, wherein the electric crosstalk caused by an actuation of a third transducer is equal in the first and second transducer; actuating the first transducer and not acutating the second transducer; simultaneously measuring a monitoring signal from the first transducer and the second transducer; and subtracting the two monitoring signals to obtain a clean monitoring signal from the first transducer.

Abstract

In a method for detecting a disturbance in an ejection unit of an inkjet print head, the ejection unit of the inkjet print head includes a pressure chamber for holding an amount of liquid and is in fluid communication with a nozzle orifice; and an actuator operatively coupled to the pressure chamber for generating a pressure wave in the liquid in the pressure chamber for ejecting a droplet of the liquid through the nozzle orifice upon application of a droplet ejection pulse. The method determining at least one resonance frequency of the pressure chamber; determining a disturbance detection pulse for generating a pressure wave in the liquid in the pressure chamber taking into account the resonance frequencies previously determined, wherein the disturbance detection pulse has a frequency spectrum different from a frequency spectrum of the droplet ejection pulse; detecting a residual pressure wave in the liquid in the pressure chamber; and analyzing the residual pressure wave previously detected for determining whether a disturbance for droplet ejection is present in the ejection unit. With this method, disturbances in the ejection unit may be derived from the residual pressure wave more reliably and easier.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a printing system (1) for cut sheets. The printing system (1) comprises a paper path comprising a loop (32, 33, 34, 35) in order to enable duplex printing on the sheets in a continuous flow of sheets in a first and second interweaving pass in the loop (32, 33, 34, 35). A controller (37) controls simplex and/or duplex printing of image data on the continuous flow of sheets. A print engine is positioned in the loop (32, 33, 34, 35) configured to dispose marking material on the sheets according to the image data. A scheduler (373) time schedules the continuous flow of sheets in an order of a plurality of actions comprising loading a sheet, printing the sheet in a first pass in the loop (32, 33, 34, 35), printing the sheet in a second pass in the loop (32, 33, 34, 35), and unloading the sheet. The scheduler (373) is configured to use a digital representation of a directed graph of vertices and edges, each vertex representing an action of the plurality of actions on a sheet of the continuous flow of sheets and each edge representing an amount of time needed for a sheet to go from a starting vertex of the edge to an ending vertex of the edge. The directed graph also represents interweaving of sheets from a first pass and a second pass. The scheduler (373) comprises a digital window mover for providing subsequent windows over the directed graph. Each window of the subsequent windows covers a finite subset of the vertices of the directed graph which correspond to actions on a number of subsequently sheets to be processed in the continuous flow of sheets, as to allow repetitive executions of an algorithm for finding a shortest path between vertices covered by the window. A window size determines for each window of the subsequent windows the amount of vertices in the window and a window step size determines which vertices are covered by the subsequent windows respectively.

Abstract

In a print server for digital high-capacity printing systems, print jobs are received, processed with predetermined application processes, and relayed to one or more printers. A method to operate the print server can include monitoring, using a collect trigger, status parameters which describe system statuses; and triggering, using trigger logic, filters to reading additional status parameters that include process statuses of application processes executed at the print server. The triggering of the filters can be based on whether the system statuses monitored with the collect trigger represent an extraordinary or abnormal operating status.

Abstract

An apparatus (20) for defect (D) detection in a printing system comprises an emitter (23) for emitting a signal towards a medium (S). A sensor assembly (25) is arranged for receiving at least part of the first emission signal reflected (R) from the medium. The apparatus is arranged for identifying a deformation in the medium from the received part of the first emission signal, and for determining a medium as suitable for printing when the first emission signal is substantially prevented from reaching the sensor assembly. A medium is determined to be suitable for printing when no signal reaches the sensor assembly. When the received signal exceeds a predefined reference, the apparatus determines a sheet to be unsuitable for printing. This configuration requires no strict alignment between the emitter and the sensor assembly, and is accurate despite vibrations and the like in the printing system.

Abstract

A vacuum table for a wide format printing system, wherein a medium support surface with vacuum holes therein is spaced apart from a bottom plate by a spacer array. The spacer array is formed by an integrally formed spacer structure with a first and a second longitudinal plate positioned between the bottom plate and the medium support surface. These plates comprise a plurality of air flow through-holes as well as a top support edge and a bottom support edge extending equidistantly to one another. A connection element connects the first longitudinal plates and is positioned between the bottom support plane and the top support plane. The use of longitudinal plates allows the spacer to be cheaply and easily produced by punching. The plates further offer the advantage of a low air flow resistance while maintaining a high rigidity of the spacer array.

Abstract

A sheet handling apparatus for a printing system includes a rotary drum having an inner chamber circumferentially surrounded by an outer peripheral wall with perforations formed therein. By means of sucking an air flow through the perforations of the drum to a suction system, sheets are attracted to the peripheral wall of the drum. A stationary shutter member is positioned inside the inner chamber for blocking the flow of air through the perforations when they pass, with the rotation of the drum, through a first predetermined angular range. The shutter member includes protrusions while the rotary drum includes recesses for receiving the protrusions, such that a meandering air flow passage is formed between the shutter member and the rotary drum. As such, friction between the rotary drum and the stationary shutter member is reduced, thereby reducing the power consumption of the suction system.

In a printing mode after the ready-to print mode, the following steps are performed: moving the web through the transport path in a transport direction along the printing unit by the transport assembly; and printing the image onto the print area of the web by the printing unit. The image is printed by applying an image material, which solidifies on the web during the printing step. The ready-to-print mode includes the step of: operating the transport assembly to prevent a deformation of the print area of the web in the transport path, while maintaining the web in the ready-to-print mode. The web is maintained ready to print while preventing a deformation of the print area of the web in the transport path.

Abstract

In a method for high speed printing of web-based media, a medium is pulled along a media transport path to a pulling transport mechanism. The orientation of the medium with respect to the media transport path is sensed and this orientation is compared to a reference orientation to detect an orientation error. If an orientation error is detected, one or more of the following steps is performed: adjusting a print job for an image to be printed on the web medium; adjusting the transport speed; emitting a communication signal; and stopping the pulling transport mechanism and the image forming unit. It is the insight of the inventor that productivity may be increased by allowing a “tight winding” printing system to start printing at relatively high speed and reduce this speed only when significantly large deviations in the orientation of the web are detected.

Abstract

A method for two-sided printing of digital images on a roll of media by means of a roll-to-roll system is provided. The roll-to-roll system includes a digital image queue including entries for digital images to be printed on the roll. For each digital image to be printed on a first side of the roll, a first entry is registered in the digital image queue, which entry includes at least one digital item identifying the digital image and digital items of print properties of the digital image. For each digital image to be printed on a second side of the roll, a second entry is registered in the digital image queue, which entry includes at least one digital item identifying the digital image and digital items of print properties of the digital image. For each first digital image to be printed on the first side of the roll, a first location on the first side of the roll is established at which first location the first digital image is intended to be printed, a second digital image is established which is intended to be printed at a second location on the second side of the roll, the second location being the backside of the first location. The first entry of the first digital image in the digital image queue is then linked to the second entry of the second digital image in the digital image queue by means of a linking digital item in the digital image queue. Abstract

A recording substrate treatment apparatus includes transporting mechanism for transporting a sheet of a recording substrate through a first chamber in the interior space of the recording substrate treatment apparatus; a first suction device arranged for removing a gaseous medium from the first chamber; and an impingement device, arranged for providing a first flow of the gaseous medium at the outer surface of the transporting mechanism. The first suction device is fluidly connected to the impingement device, such that in operation the impingement device receives a first flow of the gaseous medium from the first suction device. With this arrangement, the impingement flow is balanced with an air flow directly extracted from the first chamber of the recording substrate treatment apparatus. A printing system including such a recording substrate treatment apparatus and a method of drying a recording substrate using such a recording substrate recording apparatus are also disclosed.
