Abstract

A concrete block (20) includes six planar faces. The first (22) and second faces (24) are generally parallel; the third (26) and fourth faces (28) are perpendicular to the first (22) and second faces (24); the sixth face (32): extends perpendicular to the third face (26); extends toward the fourth face (28) and ends at a non-planar remainder section (38); is parallel to the fifth face (30); is contained in a plane that intersects a plane containing the third face (26); and a distance from the intersection to the remainder section (38) is at least as long as the thickness (34) of the first block (20); and the remainder section (38) extends between the sixth face (32) and the fourth face (28) and has a shape such that when a second block of the same construction as the first block (20) has its remainder section (38) engaged against the remainder section (38) of first block (20), the remainder sections (20) of the first and second blocks (20) mate.

Abstract

A wall base block includes opposed top and bottom faces, first and second side faces, and first and second end faces. The first end face is convex, and the second end face is concave and of generally the same curvature as the first end face so that the convex first end face of one base block can closely nest the concave second end face of an adjacent base block. The block includes alignment indicia to assist in aligning adjacent nested blocks in straight or other predetermined angular relationships. The base blocks can be used to make straight or curved bases for a wall.

Abstract

A free-standing wall includes concrete base blocks adjacent to each other forming a base course; a first set of concrete wall blocks stacked on the base course and on each other to form a first wall face; and a second set of concrete wall blocks stacked on the base course and on each other to form a second wall face that faces the opposite direction from the first wall face and that has the same number of courses as the first plurality of wall blocks. Methods of constructing the wall arrangement include laying the base blocks next to each other end to end; stacking individual blocks of a first set of blocks on the base course and then on each other to form a first wall face; stacking individual blocks of the second set of blocks on the base course and then on each other to form a second wall face that faces a direction opposite of the first wall face.

Abstract

A cast stone set (1) is provided comprising at least four molded stones (2) each having an irregular perimeter. The stones are configured to fit within a hypothetical defining border (10) as defined. The stones can be used to form a patio stone landscape feature such as a patio or walkway, or to form a stepping path. In selected uses, the stones can be reordered from being positioned with the hypothetical defining border. Methods of use and manufacture are described.

Abstract

A concrete block mold division plate (26) for front-face-up block molding. The division plate fits into a channel (44) formed in each of the side walls (22) of the mold(20) . A plurality of fasteners (48) secure the division plate (26) within each channel and to the side walls of the mold. The division plate operates in conjunction with an optimized dry cast concrete mixture to provide acceptable control of the flatness and parallelism of the top (86) and bottom(88) surfaces of the blocks(80) .

Abstract

The invention relates to a method of controlling the quality of blocks that are produced front face-up in a mold, and verifying the accuracy of the production of such blocks, to ensure that the blocks are manufactured with consistent quality and minimal block-to-block variability. Measurement locations are formed on the front faces of predetermined blocks. By measuring the distances between the measurement locations and the rear faces and comparing with a target distance, any variation provides an indication that the blocks are not being properly formed. The process variables, such as the alignment of the compression head and/or the pressure plates to the mold, can then be adjusted accordingly.
