Abstract

Apparatus and methods for self-optimizing speed dependent scaling mechanisms are provided. A user equipment (UE) may determine its mobility state by using the cell reselection parameters included in a system information block message to identify a conjectural average time between cell reselections, calculating a current value of the average time between cell reselections at the UE, and comparing both values to determine its current mobility state. Different speed dependent scaling factors may be selected for a determined mobility state of the UE, allowing adapting the mobility parameters with a finer granularity. The mobility parameters may be adjusted using the corresponding speed dependent scaling factors, which in turn provide enhanced mobility performance for the UE.

Abstract

A method, mobile device (101) and radio access network RAN (102) are disclosed for suspending and re-establishing a radio resource control (RRC)connection. In some examples, the mobile device (101) indicates a preference to have the RRC connection either suspended or released. In other examples, RAN (102) sends to the mobile device (101) a connection suspend command message instructing the mobile device to suspend a RRC connection with the RAN (102). The mobile device (101), in response to the connection suspend command message, suspends the RRC connection. When the RRC connection is suspended the mobile device (101) cannot transmit or receive user plane data to the RAN (102) and performs functions the same as or similar to idle mode functions. On suspension,RRC connection information is stored and can be used to re-establish the suspended RRC connection. The RRC connection information can be stored at the UE and/or the RAN node or some other network element. In order to re- establish the RRC connection, the mobile device (101) in one example sends a connection re-establishment request message to the RAN (102) to have the suspended RRC connection re-established. The RAN node may need to attempt to retrieve the RRC connection data (either from memory or if from another network element if stored elsewhere / if the RRC connection was suspended by another RAN node) and verifies whether the RRC connection is valid. When verified, the mobiledevice (101) receives, in response to the connection re-establishment request message, a connection re- establishment command message from the RAN (102). In response to the connection re-establishment command message, the mobile device (101) re-establishesthe RRC connection with the RAN (102), using the stored RRC connection information, and sends a connection re-establishment complete message to the RAN (102). The mobile device (101) and RAN (102)maythen resume user plane data communication with each other.

Abstract

Techniques are provided for facilitating participation in nearby user- relevant social groups for a mobile device. The mobile device is associated with a user profile which includes one or more user interests of a user. The mobile device sends a request for identifying social groups in a mobile geographic location. Each social group is represented by a social group profile which includes a social group name, one or more social group interests, and a social group geographic location. In response to the request, the mobile device receives data identifying a plurality of social group profiles corresponding to a plurality of social groups in the mobile geographic location. The mobile device presents a list of the social groups based on the received data. The list of the social groups is ranked in accordance with similarity scores produced between the user and each social group. Each similarity score is produced based on both a proximity identified between the mobile and social group geographic locations, and similarities identified between the one or more user interests and the one or more social group interests. In response to receiving a user input for entering into one of the social groups, the mobile device may enter into the social group and present a chat session interface for a chat session for the selected social group.

Abstract

Systems, apparatus and methods can be implemented for handling physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) transmissions. A user equipment (UE) can decode, on a physical hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) indicator channel (PHICH), a negative acknowledgement (NACK) associated with an HARQ process. The UE can also receive, from a base station, an uplink grant without an associated transport block. The decoded NACK and the received uplink grant can trigger a respective transmission during a PUSCH transmission opportunity. The UE can then perform, during the PUSCH transmission opportunity, one of transmission of a PUSCH transmission associated with the HARQ process, transmission of control information based on the received uplink grant, or disregarding the decoded NACK and the received uplink grant.

Abstract

Disclosed herein are systems, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable storage media for managing transient notifications using sensors. A system identifies a set of notifications to be presented to a user on a device and determines via sensors whether the user will likely receive and process communications or other separate events associated with the set of notifications. A composite notification is generated based on the set of notifications. Based on the determination, the system presents the composite notification to the user on a device. The composite notification can be of the same type as the set of notifications, a different type or a hybrid version. The composite notification can be delayed based on the determination. The transient and/or persistent original notifications that were to be sent are associated with missed calls, voicemail messages, email messages, text messages, calendar events, tasks, system notifications, and software updates.

Abstract

A system and method are disclosed for managing the wireless delivery of streaming media content to a user equipment (UE) device. A UE device establishes a network connection with a local wireless network, which in turn is associated with a wireless network region with a corresponding data infrastructure server. The UE device then requests predetermined streaming media content from the data infrastructure server. A determination is made whether the requested streaming media content is stored in transcoded form on the data infrastructure server. If so, then a control information network is implemented to transmit and receive streaming media content control data between the UE device and the data infrastructure server. In turn, the streaming media content control data is used by the data infrastructure server to control the transmission of the transcoded streaming media content over a data network for delivery to the UE device.

Abstract

A system and method are provided that enable a registrar or other server or proxy device to be used to provide a path between a pair of endpoint devices for exchanging addressing information, in order to establish a direct P2P connection. Once that connection is established, the connection may be used for any P2P data communications, e.g. SIP establishment of a VoIP call, instant messaging, online gaming, file transfer, multimedia streaming, etc. In this way, each endpoint device possesses a list of candidate addresses to establish a direct P2P connection, which may then be used for any type of communication. By relying on a registrar or other server to enable the candidate lists to be exchanged, control can still be maintained if necessary, since the candidate lists can be modified, e.g. to enable a transparent interception, to impose or remove security restrictions, etc.

Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for managing and delivering status notifications relating to multicast messages transmitted from a sending communication device to multiple recipient communication devices. Each communication device is provided with a status agent for detecting transmission of messages to a recipient device and receipt of messages from a sending device. Upon transmission, the status agent notifies a status service of the outbound message. Upon receipt of the multicast message by one of the recipients or upon the message being marked read, the recipient status agent notifies the status service. The status service then notifies the status agent of the sending device that the message has been received or read by that recipient, so that the sending device's status agent can notify a corresponding messaging application. The status service operates to reconcile outbound message notifications and received or read status updates for multicast messages.

Abstract

An antenna design technique which allows antennas to be self-matched while supporting multi-band and broadband operations. The technique includes adding a raised and curved ground plane section electrically coupled to the ground plane. The curved ground plane section allows for a smooth transition of the surface current hence a boarder bandwidth is achieved. A slit positioned between the ground plane and the ground plane section can also be used to further improve the antenna bandwidth. The technique does not increase the antenna thickness neither its volume, thus allowing application in slim handheld device applications such as flip phones. Using this technique, a narrow band antenna is made broadband to cover several frequency bands of interest. The technique is applied to a quad-band antenna to broaden its bandwidth to become a sept-band antenna. The technique is used to also improve the antenna match at all the seven bands it supports.

Abstract

A wireless network, such as an LTE ("Long-Term Evolution") network, may be configured to monitor a communications interface to set an inactivity timer that, in turn, sets the operating mode of a communications interface. The operating mode may comprise a time-domain reception pattern of the wireless device. A wireless device may monitor a communications interface that includes at least a first logical channel (for example for a first application) and a second logical channel (for example for a second application). Based on monitoring the communications interface, a first activity state for the first logical channel may be determined. Also, based on monitoring the communications interface, a second activity state (e.g., an activity status) for the second logical channel may be determined. An inactivity timer used by the communications interface may be set to a first value or a second value based on the first and second activity states. The battery life of a wireless device may be preserved by setting an inactivity timer responsive to the manner in which the wireless device is being used.

Abstract

A communication system can provide one or more mechanisms for controlling data transfer on a mobile device. A technique based on such a mechanism includes receiving a request to transfer data to an application, accessing a first service identifier associated with the data, accessing a second service identifier associated with a service mode of the application, and determining whether to allow a transfer of the data to the application based on the first service identifier and the second service identifier.

Abstract

A control circuit (such as a smartphone processor) having access to a wireless two- way transceiver (such as a short-range transceiver) determines a need to offload execution of a task to a server and then determines present unavailability of that server. This control circuit then transmits a first message to the server to prompt the server to awaken. The control circuit then transmits a second message to the server to establish a wireless connection that the control circuit employs to offload execution of the task to the server. By one approach, the aforementioned first message can include a unique identifier for the server. If desired, this unique identifier can have been provided earlier by the server via a general broadcast.

Abstract

The present document relates to Near Field Communication (NFC). In particular, the present document relates to the routing of application related information in a system comprising multiple NFC Execution environments (NFCEE). A method for identifying an application on an NFC enabled device (200) comprising a plurality of NFC execution environments (204, 205, 206, 207) is described, wherein the application is hosted by one of the plurality of NFC execution environments (204, 205, 206, 207). In one aspect an example method comprises: receiving an external request for accessing the application over an air interface (202) of the NFC enabled device (200); forwarding the request to more than one of the plurality of NFC execution environments (204, 205, 206, 207); receiving more than one response to the request from the more than one of the plurality of NFC execution environments (204, 205, 206, 207), respectively; and analyzing the more than one response to identify a positive response indicating that the application is hosted by a corresponding one of the plurality of NFC execution environments (204, 205, 206, 207).
