Abstract

Systems and methods for an intelligent rail system for a weapon include serial bus communication. Segments are provided along one or more mounting rails of a weapon, providing not only for the mounting of accessories but also power and data connectivity to the accessories and to the user of the weapon. Control of the accessories is provided with a laminated stackup that provides power and data connections with the accessories. Data from the accessories, the weapon, and the environment are captured and transmitted remote from the intelligent rail system through networking resources. The data can be transmitted to the user and external to both the weapon and the user, providing real-time information about the operation of the weapon and its accessories, the environment in which the weapon is located and operating, and the status of the weapon.

Abstract

A firearm includes a lower receiver that houses a power source, and an upper receiver is attached to the lower receiver. The upper receiver has at least one conductive strip that provides an electrical connection for a firearm accessory. A connector having a plug portion terminates electrical wiring connected to the power source in the lower receiver. A power switch assembly has a receptacle portion that receives the plug portion of the connector, and a fastener assembly for mounting the power switch assembly to a slot on the upper receiver. The slot provides a firearm accessory mounting location. The power switch assembly is operable to connect and disconnect a transfer of electrical power from the connector to the at least one conductive strip.

Abstract

An electrical power source for a firearm includes a housing, one or more rechargeable power cells stored inside the housing, and a microcontroller unit that receives data on a condition of the one or more rechargeable power cells. A network interface controller embeds the data onto an electrical circuit that is configured to be received by a firearm accessory mounted to the firearm. The data embedded on the electrical circuit is usable by the firearm accessory to provide a status of the electrical power source.

Abstract

An electronic system for a firearm includes a power source, one or more electrical conductors electrically connected to receive power from the power source, and a plurality of electronic devices. Each electronic device has an electrical input configured to receive power from the one or more electrical conductors to power the electronic device. A communication device is configured for data communication across the one or more electrical conductors. In some embodiments data can be communicated at rates greater than 10Mbps. Some embodiments utilize multi-frequency encoding, such as orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing. Some embodiments include a data communication device with a lower data communication rate and another data communication device with a higher data communication rate, and can selectively communicate through either data communication device. A method of communicating between electronic devices connected to a firearm includes powering a plurality of electronic devices connected to a firearm from a power source through one or more electrical conductors, and communicating data between the plurality of electronic devices across the one or more electrical conductors.

Abstract

A firearm includes a lower receiver storing an electrical power source and an upper receiver attached to the lower receiver. A pivot pin device provides a mechanical pivot point between the upper and lower receivers and a transfer of electrical power from the electrical power source in the lower receiver to at least one accessory rail attached to the upper receiver. The at least one accessory rail has electrical contacts that engage corresponding contacts on an electronic accessory device to supply the electrical power to the electronic accessory device.
