Abstract

A composite medium for collecting mineral particles in an aqueous slurry has a polymer substrate deposited or penetrated with an inorganic material and further coated with a hydrophobic material. The hydrophobic material can be a hydrophobic silane or a hydrophobic polymer such as polysiloxane. Alternatively, the inorganic material deposited substrate is first reacted with a reactive silane and then coated with a hydrophobic polymer. The polymer substrate can be in the form of a spherical bead, a small cube, a filter or a conveyor.

Abstract

The present application relates to a process of manufacturing specialized thickeners and the use of thus produced thickeners in high-viscosity non-aqueous formulations. The application particularly relates to the use of the thus produced thickeners in modifying the rheology of non- aqueous formulations. In this respect, provided is a reliable process of producing an organoclay based rheology additive with a higher performance compared to structurally related organoclay additives known from the state of the art, which show a universal versatility in various e.g. non- aqueous formulations. The mixed mineral organoclay rheology additives as produced according to the present invention are particularly suitable for thickening a broad variety of liquid compositions, and are apt to provide a superior viscosity to binder containing formulations.

Abstract

The invention provides compositions and methods for sealing subterranean spaces such as natural or induced fractures, vugs or annular spaces. The composition is composed of a base fluid consisting of a soluble alkali silicate, a gas generating additive, solids and a setting agent. The gas generating additive may be coated or uncoated. The gas generating additive may also be in the form of a slurry. In the case of coated additives, the coating may act as a retarder or an accelerator to the expansion and setting agent of the soluble alkali silica. Similarly, the choice of carrier fluid in a slurry may retard or accelerate the expansion and setting of the alkali silicate-based plug.

Abstract

The invention relates to surface-modified nanoparticles composed of metal or semimetal oxides or hydroxides and having been reacted on their surface with a modifier, with formation of covalent bonds. The modifier is a polysiloxane. The invention also relates to a process for preparing the nanoparticles, to their use as fillers in coating materials, plastics, foams and nail varnishes, and to dispersions which comprise the nanoparticles.

Abstract

The invention relates to addition compounds which are obtainable by reacting a) one or more polyisocyanates containing uretdione groups with b) one or more compounds of the formula (I) Y-(XH)n (I) where XH is a group that is reactive towards isocyanates and Y is a monomeric or polymeric group that is not reactive towards isocyanates and which comprises one or more aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic and/or aromatic groups, Y possessing a number-average molar mass of less than 20 000 g/mol, and n is 1, 2 or 3, and for at least 50 mol% of the compounds of the formula (I) it is the case that n = 1, with the proviso that substantially all free isocyanate groups of component a) are reacted with the compounds of the formula (I) to give an intermediate which contains uretdione groups, and subsequently the uretdione groups are reacted with c) one or more compounds of the general formula (II) Z-NHR (II) in which R is hydrogen or a straight-chain or branched alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms and Z is an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and/or aromatic basic radical and, if desired, after this reaction, reacting any reactive amino groups still present in the reaction - 56 - product with compounds that are reactive towards amino groups; and also salts or quaternization products of the addition compounds. The invention further relates to a process for preparing the addition compounds and to their use, particularly as dispersion stabilizers and dispersants.

Abstract

The invention relates to addition compounds suitable for use as wetting agents and dispersants and obtainable by reacting monofunctional or polyfunctional aromatic epoxides with polyoxyalkylenemonoamines having a number-average molecular weight of > 400 g/mol, one primary or secondary amino group and at least 4 ether oxygens per molecule, from 90 to 100% of the epoxide groups of the starting material having undergone reaction, the weight fraction of aromatic groups in the addition compounds being not more than 50% and the addition compounds containing per molecule at least one amino group on which salts can be formed, or being present as a salt. The invention also relates to a process for preparing the addition compounds, to their use as wetting agents and/or dispersants and to pigments or fillers coated with the addition compounds and to pigment pastes which comprise pigments, binders and the addition compounds of the invention.
