Abstract

The construction system includes a composition that includes Portland cement, nano-TiO2, and slag cement. The composition may also include water. The composition is cured via a CO2 curing process to produce a self-cleaning photocatalytic composite with lower carbon footprint and may be more economically manufactured than known cement-based photocatalytic composites. The unveiled synergistic effect of using slag cement and applying a CO2 curing process may reduce the porosity of the material and reduce the penetration of the pollutants that will accumulate in the surface. Thus, pollutants will be more exposed to UV light and decompose the pollutants in a greater rate. The construction system is self-cleaning in that water, such as from rainfall, may effectively clean the cured composition to reset the sequestering capabilities for the construction system to continue to remove toxic gases for the atmosphere.

Abstract

A method and system for hand-object interaction dataset collection is described herein, which is configured to support user-specified collection of hand-object interaction datasets. Such hand-object interaction datasets are useful, for example, for training 3D hand and object pose estimation model. The method and system adopt a sequential process of first recording hand and object pose labels by manipulating a virtual bounding box, rather than a physical object. Naturally, hand-object occlusions do not occur during the manipulation of the virtual bounding box, so these labels are provided with high accuracy. Subsequently, the images are separately captured of the hand-object interaction with the physical object. These images are paired with the previously recorded hand and object pose labels.

Abstract

An augmented reality (AR) interaction authoring system is described. The AR interaction authoring system is configured to support the real-time creation of AR applications to support AR-enhanced toys. The design of the AR interaction authoring system enables bidirectional interactions between the physical-virtual space of toys and AR. The AR interaction authoring system allows intuitive authoring of AR animations and toys actuations through programming by demonstration, while referring to the physical toy for a contextual reference. Using a visual programming interface, users can create bidirectional interactions by utilizing users' input on toys to trigger AR animations and vice versa. A plug-and-play IoT toolkit is also disclosed that includes hardware to actuate common toys. In this way, users can effortlessly integrate toys into the virtual world in an impromptu design process, without lengthy electronic prototyping.

Abstract

A system and method which allows the basic checkpoint-reverse-mode AD strategy (of recursively decomposing the computation to reduce storage requirements of reverse-mode AD) to be applied to arbitrary programs: not just programs consisting of loops, but programs with arbitrarily complex control flow. The method comprises (a) transforming the program into a formalism that allows convenient manipulation by formal tools, and (b) introducing a set of operators to allow computations to be decomposed by running them for a given period of time then pausing them, while treating the paused program as a value subject to manipulation.

Abstract

A woven structure includes thermoelectric ribbons interwoven with thread. Each thermoelectric ribbon includes a matrix of thermoelectric elements, the matrix having an insulating substrate that supports plural rows of thermoelectric elements, a plurality of conductive elements, and two terminals. The conductive elements form a series connection of the thermoelectric elements between the two terminals. A set of first conductive elements have a first temperature and a set of second conductive contacts have a second temperature lower than the first temperature when a first current flows in a first direction between the first matrix terminal and the second matrix terminal. The matrix is configured to form spaced-apart alternating stacks of the first conductive contacts and second conductive contacts. Each length of the yard or thread is interwoven such that it passes alternately under stacks of first conductive contacts and over stacks of second conductive contacts.

Abstract

A computer-implemented method of determining the number of photons contributing to an output of a photonic sensor, including receiving an electrical signal from the photonic sensor proportional to a number of photons the photonic sensor detects at its input as a function of time, wherein the photonic sensor is calibrated such that a response of the photonic sensor to a single photon detected is in a waveform comprising an amplitude and time, wherein the product amplitude X time is statistically bounded, determining a probabilistic boundary between one or more of electrical, optical, and thermal sources of noise of the sensor, acquiring each response wave form from the sensor through analog-to-digital conversion with a resolution in amplitude and time corresponding to accuracy required in quantifying the response, storing each acquired response, individually, in real-time, or in buffered packets in digital form, determining the number of photons for a specific time resolved acquisition, and effecting a summation of the count of photon arrivals obtained based on amplitude evaluation from each specific time resolved acquisition, for all time resolved acquisitions performed in a given observation period, yielding the number of photon arrivals associated with the amplitude evaluation.

Abstract

An apparatus for large-scale dynamic imaging of a sample is described. The apparatus includes an optical detector, a light guide, a dichroic beam splitter, and a light source. The light guide includes a first portion and a second portion. The second defines a tapered shape such that a first diameter defined by a distal end of the second portion is smaller than a second diameter defined by a proximal end of the second portion. The dichroic beam splitter is positioned between the first portion and the second portion of the light guide. The light source is configured to direct a light beam through an external surface of the dichroic beam splitter. The dichroic beam splitter is configured to direct the light beam toward the second open end of the light guide and transfer the return emitted signal through the light guide to the optical detector.

Abstract

Provided is a method of reducing a number of viable microbes, including contacting microbes with an antibiotic compound and applying pulses of electricity having a duration of between about 50 nanoseconds and about 900 nanoseconds. The pulses of electricity may have an intensity between about 20 kV/cm and about 40 kV/cm. The pulses of electricity may be applied at a frequency of between about 0.1 Hz and about 10 Hz. The microbes may be a gram-negative or a gram-positive strain of bacteria and the antibiotic may be applied at a concentration for a duration, wherein applying the antibiotic to the strain at the concentration for the duration does not reduce a viable number of bacteria of the strain as much, or at all, when the pulses of electricity are not also applied.

Abstract

A fluorescent single molecule emitter simultaneously transmits its identity, location, and cellular context through its emission patterns. A deep neural network (DNN) performs multiplexed single-molecule analysis to enable retrieving such information with high accuracy. The DNN can extract three-dimensional molecule location, orientation, and wavefront distortion with precision approaching the theoretical limit of information content of the image which will allow multiplexed measurements through the emission patterns of a single molecule.

A nanodevice provides for electric-field control of magnon-QSD interactions. The nanodevice includes a ferroelectric substrate, a ferromagnetic material disposed over the ferroelectric substrate, and a nanodiamond including an ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) spins, each NV magnetically interfacing with the ferromagnetic material. An electric field is measured by applying a voltage across the ferroelectric substrate and the ferromagnetic material, changing a magnon excitation spectrum of the ferromagnetic material with respect to an electron spin resonance frequency of the ensemble of NV spins, and measuring a relaxation rate of the ensemble of NV spins.

Abstract

The present disclosure generally relates to a composition matter and a method for cancer treatment. In particular, a composition of soft, non-cationic nanocapsules, termed Nanosac, for systemic delivery of siRNA. Nanosac is produced by sequential attachment of siRNA and polydopamine on a sacrificial MSN core, followed by removal of the MSN. Encapsulating siRNA in the capsules, Nanosac avoids the issues common to cationic gene carriers, such as toxicity and non-specific protein binding while protecting siRNA from RNase. Nanosac entered tumor cells by caveolae-mediated endocytosis, likely via albumin recruited from serum, trafficked to the cytosol, and silenced target genes.
