Abstract

One or more technique and/or systems for a coating roller assembly, including a coating applicator cage frame (122) and a frame wire (102, 302). The roller assembly can comprise a handle (150) coupled with the frame wire (102, 302) configured to operably hold the coating applicator cage frame (122). Bearings (120, 126, 320, 326) can be fixed to the coating applicator cage frame (122) at its both ends. Instead of using typical pinning or swedging techniques for holding the bearing (120, 302), a sleeve can be crimped into place over a treated surface of the frame wire (102, 302) between the second end (106) and third bend (112). In this way, for example, the structural integrity of the frame wire (102, 302) can be substantially maintained, providing for improved durability and a longer life for the roller assembly.

Abstract

The color strength of a colored batch containing effect pigments can be measured and corrected using one or more non-uniformly weighted factors to determine, at a plurality of combinations of illumination angles and measurement angles, and at one or more wavelengths, the color and intensity of light reflected or absorbed by a coating film made from the batch in comparison to a reference color strength. Based on such comparison, let-downs or batches may be passed, rejected, mixed or otherwise dispersed. The composition of such let-downs or batches may also or instead be adjusted by adding non-effect pigments, effect pigments, binder, carrier, binder, or non-effect or effect pigments dispersed in either or both of a carrier and binder, in order to correct the let-down or batch color strength to within a desired tolerance of the reference color strength.

Abstract

Water-based stains comprise or consist essentially of a polysaccharide resin and a crosslinking agent such as an isocyanate. Upon evaporation of water, the polysaccharide undergoes crosslinking with the isocyanate component, developing water resistance so that it will not redissolve upon application of a water-based or oil-based clearcoat; as a result, lifting is minimized after a drying time of, e.g., two to six hours.

Abstract

A polymer-encapsulated pigment dispersion is prepared from a mixture of (a) a carrier; (b) pigment particles; and (c) a polymeric dispersing agent having a polymer backbone, and an alkali-swellable copolymer component. The dispersing agent may provide efficient pigment wetting and dispersion using relatively low and thus economical dispersant amounts, and subsequently enable formation of polymer- encapsulating pigment dispersions that, when used in coatings, provide good opacity and good hiding characteristics, especially in titanium dioxide-containing coating compositions.

Abstract

Titanium dioxide may be more efficiently used in a coating composition containing a composite pigment particle-forming polymer if during composite formation, the polymer is initially present in a low concentration and the titanium dioxide particles and newly- formed composite particles are dispersed in a waterborne emulsion polymer that does not form such a composite. A pigment grind dispersion of titanium dioxide pigment-polymer composite particles may be made by mixing titanium dioxide particles with the waterborne emulsion polymer. The composite-forming polymer is then added to the waterborne emulsion polymer, or is added independently and concurrently with the titanium dioxide particles. The resulting titanium dioxide pigment-polymer composite particles provide improved coating composition opacity compared to a coating composition that does not contain such composite particles. The coating compositions can contain reduced titanium dioxide amounts and less than a saturation level of the composite-forming polymer.

Abstract

A pigment grind dispersion of titanium dioxide pigment-polymer composite particles is made by mixing titanium dioxide particles with an aqueous emulsion containing (i) less than a saturation level amount of water-insoluble film-forming first polymer particles that adsorb to the titanium dioxide particles, and (ii) an inhibiting or interfering amount of water-insoluble film-forming second polymer particles that do not adsorb to the titanium dioxide particles, wherein the pigment grind dispersion has a titanium dioxide pigment volume concentration of about 25 to about 50 and a titania composite ratio of about 32 to about 60. The resulting titanium dioxide pigment-polymer composite particles can provide improved coating composition opacity compared to a coating composition that does not contain such composite particles, can employ reduced titanium dioxide amounts and less than a saturation level of the first polymer, and can provide improved storage stability.
