At least one microphone is incorporated in a gaming machine along with voice recognition/analysis software that analyzes the quality of the player's voice to determine the player's age, gender, emotions, and other attributes. Such voice attributes are not direct voice commands by the player, but are voice characteristics that provide information about the player herself. After the player is characterized based on her voice attributes, game software is modified accordingly so that the game is customized for the particular player. For example, the detection that the player is a young woman may cause the game to use a certain theme involving young female characters, trendy modern music, etc. The game also adapts to the detected voiced emotions of the player. Other features of the machine cause there to be verbal interaction between the player and the machine, enhancing the playing experience.

System and method for document location and recognition
Templates of known forms are stored in computer system. The templates are digitized pixels on which connected component analyses are performed resulting in a first list of components. Five to ten of those components are selected to create an ordered feature list for each form. The computer system then captures an optical image of a form positioned on the top of a stack of forms. The optical image is digitized and stored in the computer (or processor) system as a captured digital image of pixels. A connected component analysis is performed on the captured digital image that results in a second list of image components. Image components on the second list are compared to those on the first list and then each succeeding feature in one of the ordered feature lists. If the comparison is successful, the form is known and other marks on the form may then be processed. If the comparison is unsuccessful, a new feature list is tried.

A stereoscopic optical reader of a form example is provided where two images are captured of the same scene on a known form example taken from two different angles. The stereoscopic images are amenable to parallax calculations that may help determine that the form example is flat. If the two captured images are congruent with each other and/or with a stored digital model of the form, the entire form example may be read. If the images are not congruent, the form may be rejected as not being flat, and/or the image data may be further processed via parallax operations and/or other such projections to yield a virtual flat form.
A game card incorporates a marking system having at least one layer of removable material and one or more overlying screens comprising a pattern of opaque ink elements printed on the removable layer such that the ink elements are blended into smooth tones when viewed by the human eye. An optional underlying screen provides another pattern of opaque ink elements underneath the removable layer. The invention permits combinations of designs and security measures, while ensuring that indicia printed on the card are visible so that players can scratch or otherwise remove the removable layer and at least a portion of the overlying screen as a way of marking the underlying indicia. Once the removable layer is removed, the underlying indicia on the game card is surrounded by a background that is visibly distinct from the color viewed when the removable layer is in place and has not been removed.
The present invention provides a ticket magazine that can be inserted into a drawer of a ticket dispensing machine. The magazine can be loaded with tickets externally from the machine, and provides an element or elements such as one or more bridging fingers and/or a dancer arm to enable the tickets to travel along a more advantageous ticket path with longer curl diameters. Because of the longer curl diameter, the pull force required to peel a ticket from the stack is reduced and remains substantially constant, thereby avoiding ticket jams, mis-cuts and other problems.

Matrix game involving an award based on non-highlighted grid positions
In one embodiment, the invention is a secondary game played concurrently with a conventional Keno game. In Keno, a player selects a plurality of numbers (e.g., 4-20) within an M×N grid (e.g., 8×10) of different numbers. A random number generator randomly selects a plurality of numbers (e.g., 20) in the grid. The player is then granted a first award based on matches between numbers that the player selected and the randomly selected numbers. As a secondary game played over the Keno game, for each number randomly selected, all numbers in the same row and column in the grid as the selected number are highlighted on the grid display. The player is granted a second award (e.g., free games) for each number not being in a highlighted row or column at the end of the Keno game. Variations of the secondary game are described.
An optical reader of a form is discussed where the form has a stored known boundary or boundaries. When the boundaries in a captured image do not match those of the stored known boundaries, it may be determined that an obstruction exists that will interfere with a correct reading of the form. The boundary may be printed, blank, and may include quiet areas, or combinations thereof in stored known patterns. A captured image of the form is compared to retrieved, stored boundary information and differences are noted. The differences may be thresholded to determine if an obstruction exists. If an obstruction is detected, the operator may be signaled, and the location may be displayed or highlighted. The form may be discarded or obstruction may be cleared and the form may be re-processed.

FAULT TOLERANT LOTTERY COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK, DEVICE, SYSTEM AND METHOD
A versatile and highly reliable lottery communications system employs point-of-sale terminals that can be adapted to a plurality of network technologies and service providers. The point-of-sale terminals are provided with at least two network-agnostic connecting devices to enable fast configuration regardless of the intended deployment environment. The point-of-sale terminals can be adapted to connect with multiple wireless networks at the same time, multiple wireline networks at the same time, and/or at least one wireless network and at least one wireline network at the same time, with failover and fallback programming to ensure maximum uptime for lottery operators and retail distributors.
A method and apparatus for generating and applying quality factors (QFs) to an optical reader. After an optical reader is calibrated, a mid-range gray scale level is selected and scanned. The reader outputs digital numbers (DNs) that are generated for all the pixels that will be responding to the reading of a document. A histogram of the DNs is generated and characteristics of the histogram distribution are calculated and used as QFs. For example, the standard deviation of the histogram may serve as a QF, where a lower standard deviation is preferred. Thresholds and standards may be developed from experience that indicate the operating condition of the reader. The QFs, thus, may be used during manufacturing and for field servicing of the reader.

A system and method of printing lottery tickets produces a prize structure with ticket books containing all available prizes. A game generation file is then generated withholding the high tier prizes. A list of validation numbers is then created from ticket books that hold only low tier winning ticket values. In one embodiment, only validation numbers associated with tickets having no redemption value are included in the list. Individual validation numbers are then selected at random from the created list of validation numbers, and high tier ticket prize data is assigned to each record associated with a selected validation number. The information is stored in a new file that can be contained on a separate file server from the original generation file, invoking increased access control and monitoring for additional security purposes. The new file contains the raw ticket data that is used in the printing of the tickets.

A method and system for calibrating optical reader systems employs a target with areas comprising linear gray scale levels. The gray scale levels include the darkest and the lightest scenes. The gray scale levels are illuminated by an array of LEDs and the light reflected from target impacts photo-transistors. The photo-transistors are biased in their linear ranges and the target is scanned while the LED drive current is changed. The photo-transistor responses to the different gray scale levels at the different LED drive currents are analyzed, and the LED drive current that produces a linear output from the photo-transistors over the gray scale dynamic range is selected. Several video channels may be used and their offsets and gains are normalized. Black offsets and black to white gain correction functions are generated for balancing or correcting each pixel. The correction functions may be applied by a processor for later raw image data of scenes scanned by the optical reader.
Systems and methods are described for various lottery, gaming and other applications. The systems and methods may be configured to extract player selection data froma digital image of a selection slip or other document. The extraction of player selection data may be based on information read from the slip indicating how player- written marks found on the slip should be interpreted.
