Abstract

Adhesives comprising a silyl-terminated polyether and a tackifying resin provide a considerably reduced tack at relatively slight increases in temperature, undergo purely adhesive failure at such increased temperatures, and have reversible properties (i.e., such properties are substantially retained upon cooling). Such adhesives may be used to reversibly bond a first substrate surface coated with the adhesive to a second substrate surface by adhering the substrate surfaces together at a first temperature; heating the adhesive to a second temperature at least about 20° C. above the first temperature and below the thermal degradation temperature; and separating the substrate surfaces from one another at the second temperature, wherein the adhesive comprises the cured product of a silyl-terminated polyether and a tackifier. Such adhesives may also be cleanly transferred from to a different substrate at such elevated temperatures. Such adhesives may be used for tapes suitable for easy removal at elevated temperatures.

Abstract

A semicrystalline copolyester resin composition formed by twin screw extrusion of various ingredients includes copolyester resins, antiblock, slip and antifog additives. This semicrystalline copolyester resin can be extruded on to PET film or coextruded with PET resin to form clear PET films with antifog properties. These films with antifog properties are produced in a single step without the use of solvent and does not involve any secondary step for coating a separate antifog layer. This minimizes the cost and time required by a converter to make such clear antifog films. These films containing the heat seal copolyester resin can be heat sealed to clear APET trays. Contents within the trays, such as food, can be seen without fogging on the inside of the film that is used to seal the tray. The seals are strong and the peels are smooth giving a very good packaging performance.

Abstract

A hot melt adhesive comprises a polylactide homopolymer or copolymer, such as polylactic acid; sulfonated copolyester; and at least one plasticizer, and is compostable. The plasticizer may be a solid plasticizer, such as a benzoate, and a second plasticizer may also be used. The adhesive is suitable for use in a variety of applications, such as case and carton applications, use with burlap or other compostable substrates for tree bulbs or plant seeds, and use with other compostable films, and is especially appropriate for dual-walled paperboard beverage cups. The adhesive demonstrates good bond performance comparable to non-compostable adhesives over a range of temperatures, reflective of the temperatures of hot and cold beverages.

Abstract

A hot melt adhesive composition comprises a polymer comprising poly(α-methyl-β-propiolactone) (PMPL) or a derivative thereof, wherein the PMPL is polymerized from a plurality of (R)-α-methyl-β-propiolactone monomers and a plurality of (S)-α-methyl-β-propiolactone monomers, wherein the ratio of (R):(S) monomers is from about 90:10 to about 10:90. Changing the (R):(S) ratio impacts the isotactic diad fraction and consequently the crystallinity and thermomechanical properties of the resulting PMPL. The PMPL may be hydroxyl-terminated, with the residue thereof serving as the elastomeric B block in an A:B:A triblock copolymer having hard end A blocks, such as a residue of polylactic acid. The PMPL diol may also be used as a reactant to form an alkoxysilane-terminated polymer, a polyurethane, or a (co)polyester. In some embodiments, such triblock polymers may be entirely bio-sourced and compostable.

Abstract

A roofing underlayment capable of adhering to a roof deck comprising: (a) a roofing membrane having a first and a second major surface; and (b) a pressure-sensitive adhesive disposed on the first major surface of the roofing membrane and comprising: (i) at least one of butyl rubber or polyisobutylene; (ii) a first liquid plasticizer, preferably polybutene; and (iii) a tackifier, wherein the Tg of the adhesive is at most about 100 C. The adhesive provides high bond strength and excellent long-term heat aging, weathering resistance, as well as good low temperature properties while providing a moisture proof seam. A method for making the roofing underlayment includes applying the adhesive to the membrane then applying a release liner over the adhesive layer. A method for using the roofing underlayment comprises removing the release liner then adhering the underlayment to the roof deck by contacting the first to the roof deck.
