Abstract

An embolic implantation system configured to deliver an embolic implant intravascularly to a treatment site includes an elongated delivery tube to which the embolic implant is detachably attached by a flexible loop extending through a retaining ring or opening on the embolic implant and an elongated detachment member or pull wire extending through the delivery tube and flexible loop. The pull wire has a bump near its distal end that inhibits the pull wire from moving further distally when the bump presses distally against the flexible loop and/or retaining ring. The flexible loop and retaining ring thereby serve as a distal obstruction obstructing distal movement of the bump and thereby distal movement of the pull wire into the implant.

Abstract

A model production device generates one or more contact bodies of a patient-specific surgical instrument model based on a parameterized model of a patient's bone. The parameterized model includes a predetermined number of polygons each having a predetermined position relative to the patient's anatomy. The parameterized model may be generated based on a three-dimensional model that was generated based on multiple images of the patient's bone. The model production device adds parametric fixed geometry to the patient-specific surgical instrument model based on the parameterized model and subtracts the three-dimensional model of the patient's bone from the patient-specific surgical instrument model. Each contacting body may be positioned at a high-confidence part of the parametric model, and the parametric fixed geometry may be positioned at a low-confidence part. A patient-specific surgical instrument may be manufactured based on the patient-specific surgical instrument model.

Abstract

The objectives for the designs presented herein can be for a variably flexible and kink-resistant catheter for vascular applications. The designs benefit from good compressive and tensile stiffness. A braided wire support structure can be disposed around an inner liner and an outer layer having a plurality of outer jackets of variable durometer. A metallic reinforcing layer can be cut from a hypotube and be used as the primary structure for catheter stiffness, reducing the reliance on and number of jackets to transition stiffness changes along the length of the catheter. The metallic reinforcing layer can have one or more ribbon cut segments and one or more axial hole patterns laser cut into the hypotube to progressively evolve the stiffness from proximally regions with more column stiffness and distal regions with greater lateral flexibility. The polymer jackets can be reflowed to bond the structure together.

Abstract

The present invention is directed an anchor assembly for use in spinal fixation to interconnect a longitudinal spinal rod with a patient's vertebra. The anchor assembly preferably includes a bone anchor, a body with a rod-receiving channel, an insert member (preferably a bushing), and a locking cap with a saddle. The anchor assembly preferably enables in-situ assembly where the bone anchor may be secured to the patient's vertebra prior to being received within the body of the bone anchor assembly. Accordingly, the anchor assembly enables a surgeon to implant the bone anchor without the body to maximize visibility and access around the anchoring site. Once the bone anchor has been secured to the patient's vertebra, the body may be snapped onto the bone anchor and a spinal rod may be inserted into the rod-receiving channel.

Abstract

A system and method to identify, convey, and reduce the risk of hip dislocations following hip replacement surgery. Preoperative images are used to identify the pelvic tilt of a patient while the patient is in a sitting position, a standing position, and a supine position. Based on the pelvic tilt and pelvic mobility depicted in the preoperative images, the system can identify a quantitative and/or qualitative risk of hip dislocation when the patient is seated, standing, and lying. During surgery, an intraoperative image can confirm the acetabular cup orientation once implanted and the system can determine the risk of hip dislocation when patient is in the supine position. The system can also extrapolate the dislocation risk when the patient is seated and standing based on acetabular cup position and orientation depicted in the intraoperative image.

Abstract

An orthopedic impacting tool comprises a motor, an energy storage chamber, a striker, and an anvil. The motor stores energy in the energy storage chamber and then releases it, causing the striker to apply a controlled force on an adapter to create a precise impact for use in a surgical setting. The tool may further comprise a combination anvil and adapter. The tool further allows forward or backward impacting for expanding the size or volume of the opening or for facilitating removal of a broach, implant, or other surgical implement from the opening. An energy adjustment control of the tool allows a surgeon to increase or decrease the impact energy. A light source and hand grips improve ease of operation of the tool.

Abstract

Disclosed embodiments pertain to systems to intraoperatively determine prosthetics (such as femoral stems) or a combination of prosthetics (such as a femoral stem used in combination with other prosthetics) that meet target parameters (such as leg length). The system may determine, for a patient, a plurality of leg lengths, where each leg length may correspond to a distinct digital prosthetic template in a set of digital prosthetic templates, and where each digital prosthetic template may be associated with a distinct prosthetic in a set of prosthetics. In response to a received target leg length for the patient, the system or method may determine prosthetics that when implanted in the patient would yield the target leg length and may display corresponding prosthetic information. The target length may be input using slider on a graphical user interface and the system may interactively update the prosthetics that would yield the target leg length.

Abstract

An implant for insertion into a disc space between vertebrae, wherein the implant includes a spacer portion, a plate portion coupled to the spacer portion, two bone fixation elements for engaging the vertebrae and a retention mechanism for preventing the bone fixation elements from postoperatively backing-out of the plate portion. The retention mechanism may be in the form of a spring biased snapper element that is biased into communication with the bone fixation elements so that once the bone fixation element advances past the snapper element, the snapper element is biased back to its initial position in which the snapper element interfaces with the bone fixation elements. Alternatively, the retention mechanism may be in the form of a propeller rotatable between a first position in which the bone fixation elements are insertable to a second position where the bone fixation elements are prevented from backing-out.

Abstract

An aneurysm treatment system can include an embolic implant, a delivery system, and a handle member that are collectively designed so that the combination of the handle member and the delivery system can be used as a deployment apparatus for the embolic implant. A proximal extension of the delivery tube can be placed inside a handle channel of handle member and the handle member can be manipulated to cause the proximal extension to bend to a predetermined angle with respect to the delivery tube, thereby separating the proximal extension from the delivery tube at a disconnection feature between the proximal extension and the delivery tube. The delivery tube includes a lumen having a pull wire that runs through the delivery tube and into the proximal extension. The proximal extension, pull wire, and handle member can be translated proximally in relation to the delivery tube to deploy the embolic implant.
