Abstract

A ball joint press for installation/removal of ball joints or bushings into/from suspension components of vehicles. In general, the press includes first and second frame portions, a spine/shaft coupling the first and second frame portions together, and actuators coupled to one of the first and second frame portions. The actuators are sized and spaced such that combined forces of the actuators minimize a bending moment (and bending stress) about the shaft. The actuators may also share a feed line that provides for equal pressure across both actuators. This reduces an axis of bending of the shaft, and causes the first and second frame portions to remain substantially parallel and the force in line with an axis of motion to install or remove the ball joint.

Abstract

A reversing mechanism for a motorized hand-held ratcheting tool. A toggle trigger is coupled to a reversing mechanism of the tool, and a rotational drive direction of the tool is controlled via the trigger instead of a separate knob or dial. For example, when the trigger is rotated or pivoted in a forward direction (depression of a bottom or back of the trigger), the reversing mechanism is rotated into a right hand threaded fastener's tightening direction, and when the trigger is rotated or pivoted in a reverse direction (depression of a top or front of the trigger), the reversing mechanism is rotated into a right hand threaded fastener's loosening direction. The motor's rotational direction is not changed by the toggle trigger, but the trigger does control the rotational drive direction of the tool and activates the motor and variable speed circuitry.

Abstract

A flexible head joint for a tool, such as a motorized ratcheting-type tool. The flexible joint also allows an output mechanism of the tool, such as a ratchet head, to be disposed at an angle with respect to a housing to the tool, which houses a motor. For example, the first shaft is pivotably coupled to a first connector, which may have a tongue shaped portion. The second shaft is pivotably coupled to a second connector, which may have a slotted portion adapted to receive the tongue portion. This provides two pivot points that have parallel axes.

Abstract

The present invention relates broadly to commutation control of a BLDC motor for use with, for example, a power tool. The method uses a controller to control a BLDC motor in the event of a position sensor failure. Rather than ceasing operation of the motor and indicating a fault or error message to the user, the present invention determines when the next transition should occur based on the time between past hall transitions using a timer. Thus, if one or two position sensors are no longer providing position information to the controller, the controller can detemiine when the transitions would be changing based on past transitions to continue controlling the motor and prevents the motor from ceasing operation.

Abstract

Overcurrent protection of an electrically powered, motorized device, such as a power tool, wherein the tool includes a tool housing, an output assembly, a trigger, an electrical safety device, a motor, an indicator, a controller, and a power source. The electrical safety device, for example a fuse, is disposed in series with a power connection from the power source to the controller. The controller measures current passing through the electrical safety device in time intervals when the trigger is actuated. The controller determines accumulated thermal energy passing through the electrical safety device, and compares the accumulated thermal energy to a threshold. If the accumulated thermal energy exceeds the threshold, the controller ceases or discontinues to allow power to be provided to the motor from the power source, thereby shutting off the motor. The controller may also activate the indicator to indicate a fault to the user.

Abstract

The present invention relates to switching element protection of a BLDC motor, such as used with a power tool. The present invention checks each switching element of a power stage individually for a short circuit when a trigger of the tool is actuated. Each switching element is turned ON for a period of time (such as 1-5 microseconds, for example), current flowing through the half-bridge or the full power stage is measured, and that switching element is turned OFF. When the current is greater than or equal to a threshold (such as 5 A, for example), the controller stops and indicates a fault condition. By testing each switching element in order, the controller is able to determine whether the shorted switching element is the opposite one in the half-bridge being tested.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a method of commutation control of a brushless DC (BLDC) motor. The method uses a controller to control the BLDC motor using a modified six-step commutation. The method adds six intermediate steps that overlap the six-step commutation. Each of the six steps overlap with preceding and following steps, resulting in six additional intermediate steps in which all three phases are active. By doubling the number of steps, current and torque will vary less over time compared with current solutions without increasing the size or changing the design of the motor.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a motor timeout of a power tool. When a trigger of the tool is unintentionally actuated, power is provided to a motor of the tool to cause an output assembly of the tool to operate. This can be problematic when the tool is being stored. To address this situation, the tool initiates or starts a motor timer when the motor is running at any nonzero speed. If the trigger remains continuously actuated, with the motor running at any nonzero speed, and the motor timer reaches a threshold limit, the tool ceases or discontinues to allow power to be provided to the motor, thereby shutting off the motor. This reduces the power source from being unintentionally discharged, and the chance of the tool creating a situation where the output assembly can unintentionally cause damage to the storage mechanism or other surroundings.

Abstract

The present invention relates to current pulse limiting protection of a motorized device that includes a motor, a controller, and a power source (such as a battery). The controller implements current pulse limit protection to protect the controller and battery from damage due to overcurrent pulse events. For example, the controller may measure current flowing through the controller, and detect a number of current pulses that meets or crosses a first current threshold, regardless of a duration of each of the current pulses. The controller counts each current pulse that meets or crosses the first current threshold, and if the number of current pulses counted meets or exceeds a threshold number of pulses, the controller indicates a fault and ceases operation of the tool to protect the controller and battery from damage.

Abstract

A slip-on adapter that is adapted to be coupled to existing adapters that have already been developed. The slip-on adapter couples to existing adapters by positive retention on either the outside diameter or inside diameter of the existing adapter. For example, the slip-on adapter can include an 0-ring that grips the outside diameter of the existing adapter that it is slipped onto. The slip-on adapter can also be used as a "flip adapter" with different geometries at both ends for use with two different size ball joints. This allows for less expensive adapters for new size ball joints by connecting to existing adapters, rather than requiring full machining of a new adapter.

Abstract

A push button release mechanism for coupling together two portions of a tool, such as pliers. The push button release mechanism can include a push button and one or more balls pushed in a radially-outward direction by geometry of the push button to pivotally couple the two portions together. The balls are nomially pushed outward by an engagement portion. Depressing a push button head axially downward causes the balls to align with a receiving portion, which allows the balls to descend into the interior of the mechanism. The push button release mechanism is also threadably coupled with a threaded opening of one of the portions. The threaded opening can have defomied threads to increase the retention torque required to rotate the push button release mechanism.

Abstract

The present invention relates broadly to a flow diverter disposed in a plenum area of a motor cylinder chamber (also referred to as kidney ports). The flow diverter acts as a barrier between a main inlet to the motor and an inlet to the cylinder chamber, and directs air or fluid to vane lifter ports of the motor before the air or fluid flows to the inlet to the cylinder chamber. In addition, the flow diverter can serve to regulate air or fluid flowing into the cylinder chamber to control power of the tool. The flow diverter allows for numerous options of where the main inlet to the motor can be positioned and provides a means of regulating the air or fluid flowing into the cylinder chamber.

Abstract

Inserts disposed in a housing of a pneumatically or hydraulically powered tool having a motor adapted to rotate a drive lug in either of first and second rotational directions. The insert is composed of a material resistive to creep and/or stress relaxation. The insert contacts fasteners applying a clamping force to the tool and remove the housing from the load path of the clamping force, thereby reducing the possibility of fluid leaks.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a housing clamp for a power tool housing, such as a drill, router, grinder, impact wrench, ratchet wrench, screwdriver, or other powered tool. The housing clamp includes a circumferential flange and recess that extends at an angle. When the housing clamp is installed, the housing clamp couples two portions of a power tool housing together. As the housing clamp is tightened onto the housing portions, the flange loads the housing with even pressure around its circumference providing a clamping load. The housing clamp provides even pressure around a large area at a working end of the tool, allowing the tool to be thinner in a dimensionally critical area.

Abstract

A direction selector mechanism for a hand-held power tool that includes internal linkages that move an actuation point of a direction selection from above the trigger (as in previous tools) to a top of the tool. For example, the control for the direction selector mechanism includes a direction toggle positioned on a top of the tool, and that is movable by a user to select either of first and second rotational directions (e.g. clockwise and counter-clockwise). This position/location allows the user to select or change between the first and second rotational directions with a user's thumb for both direction changes, in either hand ambidextrously, and places the trigger actuation higher up in the tool, closer to the axis of output of the tool.

Abstract

A tool bit with a surface layer metallurgically bonded on a substrate layer using electrospark deposition (ESD) that allows the tool bit to reduce camout and engage a fastener head for one-handed starting and removal. The surface layer has a rougher finish, compared to conventional tool bits, and therefore better grips engagement surfaces of a mating recess of the fastener during use. The reduction of camout provides greater durability to the tool bit and resists erosion and wear of the engagement surfaces of the fastener.
