Abstract

A positioning estimate for a user equipment (UE) is determined based on a combination of uplink-based positioning and downlink-based positioning. Positioning measurements based on downlink signals and uplink signals can be utilized to determine the positioning estimate. The positioning estimate may be computed by the UE or a node of a wireless communications network. This positioning scheme can include two parts, where a first part and second part are either uplink-based or downlink-based, but the two parts are different from each other. Positioning measurements performed in the first part may be sent along with reference signals in the second part.

Abstract

A wireless communication network (102) can employ techniques for the network (102) to indicate specific radio access characteristics to be used by a user equipment (100) 5 when responding to a paging message. The network (102) can indicate a specific radio access technology (RAT) that the UE (100) should use when connecting to the network (102). In this manner, the UE (100) can initiate a connection using the desired RAT rather than first initiating a connection with an incorrect RAT and performing a handover or network reconfiguration.

Abstract

For uplink-based positioning, a transmission of an uplink reference signal via a transmit beam at a user equipment (UE) (100) is coordinated with a respective receive beams at one or more receivers (110). A positioning computation node (105) sends configuration information to the UE (100) and to the one or more receivers (110). The configuration information enables the receivers (110) to configure receive beams (111) to receive the uplink reference signal transmission from the UE (100). The receivers (110) perform various measurements of the uplink reference signal and report the measurements as well as beam information to the positioning computation node (105), which generates a position estimate.

Abstract

This technology pertains to a receiving device, a receiving method, a program and an information-processing system which are capable of providing an application program that is executed in conjunction with AV content. A trigger extraction unit extracts trigger information that is transmitted along with received AV content, and includes time information for causing a data-broadcasting application to operate at a prescribed time. A TPT analysis unit obtains a command for controlling the operation of the data-broadcasting application, and a TPT associated with the period of validity of the command. A control unit controls the operation of the data-broadcasting application according to the valid command, when the time expressing the progression of the AV content and obtained from the time information included in the extracted trigger information falls within the period of validity of the command, on the basis of the obtained TPT. It is possible to apply this technology to a television receiver for receiving a digital television broadcast signal, for example.

Abstract

An identity of a person proximate to a display device is determined by an identity profile controller. The identity profile controller determines whether a configured viewing profile exists for the person. Upon determining that the configured viewing profile exists for the person, the identity profile controller instructs a bezel display controller to display a profile identifier associated with the configured viewing profile via a two-dimensional light- emitting diode (LED) array located within a bezel of the display device outside of the display area of the display. The identity profile controller automatically adjusts display device settings for the display device based upon the configured viewing profile. Abstract

An embodiment of the invention involves a method for selecting and maintaining wireless communications for wireless mesh networks between tier-2 and tier-3 nodes. The method comprises a first operation of receiving channel information from a first wireless node operating as an access point. The channel information includes each channel number used by one or more wireless nodes that are detected by the first wireless node to be operating within a signal coverage area of the first wireless node. Then, an active scan is conducted on a frequency spectrum for wireless signals based on the channel information. Such scanning is accomplished by initially scanning frequencies of each channel number used by the one or more wireless nodes. After the scanning, a determination is made whether to (i) maintain wireless communications with the first wireless node or (ii) establish new wireless communications with a new wireless node (AP). Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Abstract

An embodiment of the invention involves a method for selecting an infrastructure mode wireless channel for a tier-2 wireless node of a plurality of wireless nodes forming a wireless mesh network. The method comprises a first operation of receiving information from at least one neighboring node. Then, the first wireless node determines if a collision has occurred with the at least one neighboring node, where the collision is an overlapping of wireless channels selected by the first node and the at least one neighboring node. If a collision has occurred, the first wireless node compares its network degree, iterative count, and MAC address (progressively in that order) with that of its neighboring node to determine which of the first wireless node or the at least one neighboring node is responsible for re-selecting a different wireless channel from a set of non- overlapping wireless channels that are available to the wireless mesh network. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Abstract

Antenna arrays are calibrated by providing one or more test signals from the antenna array to be calibrated to a receiving sensor while varying ambient operating conditions over some predetermined range of ambient operating conditions. The signal properties of these test signals may be measured by the receiving sensor or associated spectrum analyzer, and the ambient operating conditions under which the test signals are provided may be similarly measured. Thereafter, signal offsets for each of the antenna array's elements may be determined as a function of the measured ambient operating condition. Calibration information corresponding to these signal offsets may then be stored in a memory of the antenna array for use during operation of the antenna array. This calibration information may be in the form of a lookup table or a curve- fitting equation.

Abstract

The detail and clarity of high-definition video content may be enhanced by a display device or client-side device before being displayed. In certain embodiments, the high-definition video image frames may be upsampled by scaling the image's resolution. The now-upsampled HD video image frames may then be low pass filtered so as to concentrate the image's energy distribution into a tighter range of frequencies. The filtered HD video image frames may then be sub-sampled back down, such as to the original HD image's frame resolution, or other HD-level resolution, without compromising image detail. In this fashion, the clarity and detail level in video content, even though already considered of a high-definition quality, may be further improved.

Abstract

In accord with embodiments and implementations consistent with the present invention, rather than perform a full scan of every frequency to find a channel, the tuner is programmed to find a reasonable sample of channels. For example, the tuner can search for at least two or three (generalized as N) channels to determine the frequency plan of the channels (by virtue of detection of at least one channel) and then use one of the known plans to directly identify the frequency map. The process can then step quickly through each frequency, without optimizing or fine tuning each channel, to determine the existence of a channel. With this process the number of tunable channels is found quicker and the initial setup time is shortened. Abstract

Particular embodiments generally relate to a parallel tasking framework. Network devices may use discovery messages to determine which services are being offered by different devices. The services provided using the framework allow parallel processing of tasks using modules found in devices. Distribution of modules from one of the devices to other devices may be provided to process a project, which may be any analysis that needs to be performed on data. A project may be made up of tasks that need to be performed where each task may process at least part of the data for the project. The parallel tasking framework allows a device to use processing resources from other devices when other devices are not using the full availability of their processing resources.

Abstract

A peer to peer (P2P) application which can be applied to TVs (18). The P2P application promotes a social networking aspect by allowing devices connecting to either the home mesh network (12) and/or Internet (14) to share contents and create common interest channels. The P2P application does not require support from network infrastructure (e.g., no central servers), and consequently is extremely cost effective and easy to deploy. The distributed nature of this system allows users to join or leave the network at will. It takes advantage of the local home mesh network connectivity, or existing Internet connections. A participant that tunes into a broadcast on an Internet channel is not only downloading a video stream, but also uploading it to other participants watching the program. Data mining systems capture user preferences and create personalized Internet channels on the TV using the P2P network.

Abstract

In response to a channel change command in a home network, to reduce latency a real time network bandwidth determination is made and if the determination indicates that bandwidth is sufficient to support only I-frame transmission, then only I-frames are sent (56) temporarily from the source (10) to the sink (14). Otherwise, I and P frames only are sent (62) and may be encoded at a faster than normal frame rate and displayed at a lower than normal frame rate. If the sink (14) is not configured for non-standard groups of pictures (GOP) some of the P frames can be indicated to the sink (14) as being B-frames.

Abstract

A method, system and apparatus provide that movement of an interference pattern of a coherent light beam is mapped to cursor movement to effect navigation of a user interface. A remote controller operable to emit a coherent light beam is in cooperative arrangement with a display device operable to display a user interface, navigable by means of a cursor. A laser diode element and coupled diffuser element of the remote controller generate the coherent light beam. Movement of the remote controller causes movement of an interference pattern of the coherent light beam impinging upon a sensor of the display device; movement of the interference pattern is sensed by the display device and mapped to corresponding movement of the cursor in the user interface. Thus, the remote controller may be used to navigate an on-screen user interface by movement of the remote controller itself.

Abstract

A next position selector for motion estimation iterative search improves the efficiency and quality of the integer-pel motion estimation iterative search by easily and quickly determining the center point of the next search area. By taking a position of the SAD value of the present search area and mapping that position to a center point of the next search area, the process of determining the next search area is very efficient. A local minimum avoidance scheme improves avoids being trapped in a local minimum. By remembering the previous position/direction, the search is able to continue in the correct direction to ensure that the search continues without a back and forth search that is trapped in a local minimum. Applications of this improved motion estimation search include stabilizing an image as well as many other applications where motion vectors are used.

Abstract

A speculative start point selection for motion estimation iterative search improves the efficiency and quality of the integer-pel motion estimation iterative search by speculatively selecting the start position of the iteration. The start position is selected by comparing the Sum of Absolute Differences (SAD) value of a 0 motion vector, a predicted motion vector and a global motion vector (GMV) and selecting the position with the smallest SAD value. A refinement scheme with a threshold improves the efficiency and quality of the motion estimation iterative search by performing several comparisons to ensure the proper motion vector is selected. Applications of this improved motion estimation search include stabilizing an image as well as many other applications where motion vectors are used.

Abstract

An apparatus or method of efficiently coding high resolution video using texture analysis and synthesis techniques in a scalable video coding framework. A high-resolution video signal is spatially downsampled and encoded into a base-layer. Texture and structure information are extracted from the downsampled signal and base-layer for use by a texture synthesizer. The texture synthesizer is structurally and texturally aware utilizing edge information from a base-layer of the synthesizer to improve synthesis. After synthesis, a video quality assessor directs enhancement- layer coding of unacceptably synthesized areas by alternate (non-textural) coding means, such as conventional AVC or MPEG-2 coding. In one mode, the quality assessor iteratively improves synthesis of certain blocks to make them acceptable for enhancement-layer coding. The apparatus or method outputs a bit stream, or bit streams, containing both the coded base-layer and the enhancement-layer.

Abstract

A graphical user interface (GUI) for setting up a computer system at startup. The GUI may include a first plurality of on-screen selectable icons, wherein each of the first plurality of on-screen selectable icons is associated with at least one respective setup procedure that when invoked causes a processor to execute an associated setup functionality. The GUI further includes a first visual indicator operable to identify one of the first plurality of on-screen selectable icons responsive to a user selection thereof. A second visual indicator may be used to identify a completion of a setup procedure associated with the user selection of the one of the first plurality of on-screen selectable icons. The GUI also includes a plurality of on-screen navigational icons for navigating through the first plurality of on-screen selectable icons, for canceling a selection and for exiting a startup user experience.

Abstract

In a home network, instead of filtering out non-demanded digital programs on programs of a main digital transport stream after decryption by a conditional access (CA) device (20, 14, 214), the audio video data of all non-demanded digital programs is removed prior to decryption, to conserve bandwidth in the home network, while all non-audio video data remains in the stream for use as required by the CA device.

Abstract

A codec extends the AVC standard in order to provide support for coding high resolution still image pictures within the AVC coding of a lower resolution video. The codec is capable of capturing an AVC video stream while concurrently capturing high resolution still images at random intervals relative to the video stream. Each captured high resolution still image is embedded within the video stream as a single layer bit stream. Each embedded high resolution still image signals or forces the start of a new GOP in the coded video sequence. The AVC standard is extended to include new syntax for the sequence parameter sets. In one embodiment, a modified sequence parameter set defines a new profile that signals the presence of a high resolution still image in sequence with AVC video.
