Abstract

A system and method of simulating and optimizing industrial and other processes includes a computer that performs multivariate analysis of input variables and output variables to generate a data model of the operation of the process. For industrial applications, the input variables include process variables and the output variables include result variables from the operation of the industrial process. The data model determines contributions to changes in the output or result variables by the respective input or process variables and is provided to a predictive algorithm to identify parameter values for input or process variables expected to have a most significant impact on the output or result variables during performance of the process. The outputs of the predictive algorithm are parameter values that are provided as input or process variables to the industrial process for simulation or performance optimization or product recommendations/optimizations.

A crosslinkable composition, a crosslinked composition formed upon exposure of the crosslinkable composition to ultraviolet radiation or ionizing radiation, articles containing these compositions, and methods of making the articles are described. The crosslinkable compositions contain two different (meth)acrylate copolymers and can be applied to a substrate using an extrusion process. While being extruded, the crosslinkable compositions advantageously are resistant to crosslinking and/or increased molecular weights. The crosslinked compositions can function as adhesive compositions that are particularly well suited for use in electronic devices.

Abstract

A shielded electrical cable includes conductor sets extending along a length of the cable and spaced apart from each other along a width of the cable. First and second shielding films are disposed on opposite sides of the cable and include cover portions and pinched portions arranged such that, in transverse cross section, the cover portions of the films in combination substantially surround each conductor set. An adhesive layer bonds the shielding films together in the pinched portions of the cable. A transverse bending of the cable at a cable location of no more than 180 degrees over an inner radius of at most 2 mm causes a cable impedance of the selected insulated conductor proximate the cable location to vary by no more than 2 percent from an initial cable impedance measured at the cable location in an unbent configuration.

Abstract

An electrically conductive bonding tape includes a conductive first film between, and bonded to, conductive first and second adhesive layers. The first film and the first and second adhesive layers are conductive at least along a thickness direction of the bonding tape. Each of the first and second adhesive layers includes conductive particles dispersed substantially as a single layer in a substantially insulative adhesive material. The plurality of conductive particles in each of the first and second adhesive layers has an average particle size Pav and a standard of deviation Psd, such that Psd/Pav is less than about 0.2. Each of the first and second adhesive layers has an average thickness of no more than about 15% greater than the average particle size of the particles in the adhesive layer. An average surface roughness of opposing major first and second surfaces of the first film is less than 10 microns.

Abstract

A curable composition comprising 20 wt. % to 60 wt. %, optionally 30 wt. % to 58 wt. %, or optionally 40 wt. % to 55 wt. % of an acrylic block copolymer, 5 wt. % to 60 wt. %, optionally 20 wt. % to 50 wt. %, or optionally 15 wt. % to 45 wt. %, of an epoxy resin; 1 wt. % to 60 wt. %, optionally 5 wt. % to 50 wt. %, or optionally 15 wt. % to 45 wt. %, of a polyol; and 0.5 wt. % to 10 wt. %, optionally 0.75 wt. % to 8 wt. %, or optionally 1 wt. % to 5 wt. %, of a curing agent. The curable composition may be used to prepare a tape that is initially soft (i.e., low-modulus), which enables a water-tight seal during an electronics assembly process at ambient temperatures, and then cures after UV-activation into a more rigid (i.e., higher modulus) tape that has a desirable balance of impact resistance (both tensile and shear impact), dynamic shear resistance, and pushout resistance.

Abstract

Optical films are disclosed that include a plurality of interference layers. Each interference layer reflects or transmits light primarily by optical interference. The total number of the interference layers is less than about 1000. For a substantially normally incident light in a predetermined wavelength range, the plurality of interference layers has an average optical transmittance greater than about 85% for a first polarization state, an average optical reflectance greater than about 80% for an orthogonal second polarization state, and an average optical transmittance less than about 0.2% for the second polarization state.

Abstract

Optical systems including a reflective polarizer are described. The reflective polarizer includes first and second reflection zones, such that for light substantially normally incident on the reflective polarizer, the first zone substantially reflects light in a first wavelength range and substantially transmits light in a different non-overlapping second wavelength range, and the second zone substantially reflects light in the second wavelength range and substantially transmits light in the first wavelength range. The first and second reflection zones have first and second thicknesses having corresponding first and second mid-points separated by a distance d. In some embodiments, a longitudinal chromatic aberration of the optical imaging system of the first wavelength range to the second wavelength range caused when reducing d so that the first and second reflection zones are immediately adjacent is a distance h where 0.3 h≤d≤0.7 h.

Abstract

A wireless communication system includes a transmitter configured to transmit at least first and second radio waves having respective different frequencies F1 and F2, an electrically conductive first passive substantially linear medium, an electrically conductive first passive substantially nonlinear medium disposed proximate the first passive substantially linear medium, and a first magnetic film covering at least a portion of the first passive substantially linear medium. When the transmitter transmits the first and second radio waves, the first passive substantially linear and nonlinear media receive the first and second radio waves and generate first and second signals propagating therein at the respective frequencies F1 and F2. At least one intermodulation signal having a frequency F3 equal to nF1+mF2, where m and n positive or negative integers, is generated in the first passive substantially nonlinear medium. The first magnetic film reduces the at least one intermodulation signal by at least 2 dB.

A sanding system is presented that includes a tool with a motor which, when actuated, drives movement of a drive shaft. The system also includes a backup pad coupled to the drive shaft. The backup pad is configured to receive an abrasive article. Movement of the drive shaft causes movement of the abrasive article. The system also includes a compliant damping unit configured to provide variable compliance for the tool when the abrasive article contacting a worksurface. The system also includes an electronic controller that receives a system operating condition and sends a signal to the compliant damping unit based on the system operating condition.

Abstract

Methods and apparatuses for roll coating are provided. The roll coating system (100) includes a coating roll (110) having a deformable inner layer (12) with a surface thereof covered by a deformable outer layer (14), the inner layer being softer than the outer layer. A substrate (3) is conveyed to the nip (12) between the coating roll and a back-up roll (120). A metered coating material is transferred from the coating roll to a patterned surface structure (40) of the substrate at the nip to form a conformal coating on the patterned structure of the substrate.

Abstract

A thermal imaging system for use with a respirator mask comprising an in-mask display unit, and methods of configuring and operating such a system. The system uses a thermal imaging camera to capture a thermal image. The system is configured with the capability to shift from a default view in which an in-mask micro-display of the in-mask display unit shows a primary subimage of the captured thermal image but does not show a secondary subimage of the captured thermal image, to an auxiliary view in which the secondary subimage is now shown in place of at least a portion of the primary subimage.

Abstract

Methods of forming an array of patterns on a substrate are provided. A replication medium is coated onto a relief structure of a patterned template and solidified. Patterned templates with the replication medium are transferred to an array of sub-regions of a tiling region of a substrate, where heat and/or radiation can be applied to the replication medium. The patterned templates are then removed from the substrate to form a patterned surface structure on the substrate.
